This was one of the great touring and recording bands of the 1980s, Harrell and Woods inspiring each other and the rhythm section inquiring and swinging. Woods didn't need to change anything about his own style, but it blossoms anew in counterpoint with Harrell's lyrical fire, and each album is handsomely programmed and delivered … Flash, the final album with Harrell (who has since been replaced by Hal Crook as the front-line horn), has the edge of some outstanding composing by the trumpeter – "Weaver" and "Rado" are particularly sound vehicles – and Crook's extra tones on a few tracks.

An imaginative mixture of the popular and the unusual. Barber’s only quartet has at its heart the famous Adagio for Strings: the latter is an arrangement of the second of the quartet’s two movements. That Adagio – which here benefits not only from the unfamiliarity of the chamber original but also from the Duke’s sensitively understated approach on their first recording for Collins Classics – is here surrounded by some captivating faster music (including a brief return to the opening Molto allegro’s ideas). And Robert Maycock’s excellent booklet notes hint at what those famous seven minutes of slow, sad passion in particular could really be said to be about: young homosexual love in the Austrian woods. Thirty years later, in 1966, another American in Europe, and still in his twenties, wrote his first string quartet, though it’s unlikely to be a direct reflection of love, this time in Paris.

Trombonist Al Grey is joined by emerging young tenor saxophonist Billy Mitchell on this pair of 1962 sessions, which were originally issued as an Argo LP and finally reissued on a limited-edition CD by Verve in 2003. The first five tracks also feature trumpeter Dave Burns and obscure pianist Floyd Morris. "Nothing But the Truth" is smoldering up-tempo blues with a bit of a gospel flavor, while Morris gets into the groove of the mid-tempo "Three-Fourth Blues." Mitchell especially shines on Melba Liston's soulful ballad "Just Waiting." The three tracks from the earlier session feature Donald Byrd on trumpet and Herbie Hancock on piano. Also here is the slashing hard bop composition "Minor on Top." Another Liston piece, "African Lady," is complex and showcases Grey's sensitive solo.

A brilliant bassist, Charnett Moffett shares a fault with Ron Carter: their own records have a great excess of bass solos. Moffett's debut as a leader features him with diverse groups ranging from duets to quartets and including such fine players as tenor saxophonist Michael Brecker, keyboardist Kenny Drew Jr, guitarist Stanley Jordan, drummer Al Foster, Kenny Kirkland on keyboards and several of his relatives (including his father, drummer Charles Moffett). Unfortunately, Charnett (who wrote all eight songs except "Mona Lisa" and "Softly As In a Morning Sunrise") dominates the solo space.

Tafelmusik (table music) is a term used since the mid-16th century for music played at feasts and banquets. Some of the most significant composers of Tafelmusik included Johann Schein and Michael Praetorius, who wrote about the genre in his Syntagma musicum of 1619. Composed in 1733, Telemann s Tafelmusik has been compared as a collection to the renowned Brandenburg Concertos of Johann Sebastian Bach in clearly demonstrating the composer s supreme skill in handling a diversity of musical genres and a variety of instruments. Played here by the Freiburger Barockorchester under the direction of their leader Gottfried von der Goltz, these Baroque gems shine as never before.

This is part I & part II of the re-issue series of the cult-band of the 80s in the fieid of electronic-nature music - G.E.N.E. In the years 1991 until 1999 they released quite a number of CDs which all gained big success all over the world. Inspired by the travelling of the artists Cléo de Mallio and Lisa-Maria Tedesca they created compositions which became all-time greats in the collections of their fans. The music built from original tones and authentic sounds was put together with electronic devices to create unique compositions. This first CD covers the best songs from the initial releases “Get The Taste” (1991), "Katchina” (1991), “Diving Dreams" (1992), "Fluting Paradise" (1992) and last but not least "Mediterranean Moods” (1993).

A beautiful tribute to Compendium Records – first a store, then an important label in Norway during the 70s – home to a wicked range of jazz and progressive rock sounds! Compendium's store had a great reputation for bringing in imports from the UK and beyond – especially some of the more important leftfield artists of those crucial early 70s underground years. So when the label got its start, it was actually with a Henry Cow album – before then branching out into work from some local talents, and some important jazz rock material as well. The package is very nicely done – words and images of the store and label at their height – with tracks that include "Oslo" by Henry Cow, "Watching Everybody Else" by Blow Out, "Spanish Knee" by Hugh Hopper, "Street Talk" by Vanessa, "Steam" by Karin Krog & Archie Shepp, "Peace In The World" by Charles Austin & Joe Gallivan, "Come Down" by Saluki, and "Seven Drones" by Hopper, Dean, Tippett, & Gallivan

Beethoven composed his Fifth and Sixth Symphonies more or less simultaneously during the years 1804-8, and they were both first performed in a memorable all-Beethoven concert in December 1808 that also featured the Fourth Piano Concerto (with Beethoven performing at the piano for the last time in public), the Choral Fantasy, and some other works. Despite being composed together, the Fifth and Sixth inhabit very different musical worlds. The fifth is a marvel of terse, dramatic writing, whereas the Sixth is more leisurely, frankly programmatic, and celebrates the glories of nature and the countryside.

He started out with Elvis Presley on the Sun label and jumped from rockabilly stardom to the status of a country legend. Johnny Cash began performing concerts at prisons starting in the late 1950s. Although Cash cultivated a romantic outlaw image, he never served a prison sentence. Cash's record, "Folsom Prison Blues", made the country Top 5. His "I Walk the Line" became No. 1 on the country charts and entered the pop charts Top 20. "Home of the Blues" followed, recorded in July 1957. That same year, Cash became the first Sun artist to release a long-playing album. His single "Don't Take Your Guns to Town" became one of his biggest hits.

Livin' the Night Life: '80s New York Garage Classics Review by Andy Kellman
Here's an unexpected complement to the compilations that celebrate Paradise Garage DJ and remixer Larry Levan – such as Journey into Paradise: The Larry Levan Story and Classic West End Records Remixes. Released by the Harmless-affiliated Backbeats label, Livin' the Night Life: '80s New York Garage Classics does not contain any of the tracks from either previous set and boasts some of best post-disco/pre-house singles from the decade, including Young & Company's "I Like (What You're Doing to Me)," Cultural Vibe's "Ma Foom Bay [Love Chant Mix]," Sleeque's "One for the Money," and the Class Action version of "Weekend" (more electronic-oriented than the Phreek version heard on Journey into Paradise). Serious collectors likely have most of what's here, but newcomers will be knocked out by just about everything.

Don't expect too many surprises from Kirk Whalum's Hymns in the Garden if you're familiar with his previous few gospel-tinged albums like Unconditional and The Gospel According to Jazz. Like those two albums, Whalum goes out of his way to invest a considerable amount of spiritual sentiment into his candy-coated crossover jazz. On this particular album, the religious overtones come via the song titles, "I Will Trust in the Lord," "Christ Is All," and "I Want Jesus to Walk With Me" being three examples.
