Pretty in Pink[Original Soundtrack] Review by Stephen Cook
As the auteur of post-punk suburban adolescence, director John Hughes appropriately enhanced his '80s movies with relatively harmless new wave soundtracks. Where earlier films like The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles included the occasional Wang Chung or Simple Minds track, though, 1986's Pretty in Pink boasted a full lineup of "rock of the '80s" highlights. Foremost, of course, is the Psychedelic Furs' breakout remake of their 1981 college radio favorite "Pretty in Pink"; while it pales in relation to the raw and electric original, this new version still holds up even with some added horns and a general glossing over of the once hard-driving guitar and drum parts. Even better are tracks by OMD ("If You Leave"), Echo & the Bunnymen ("Bring on the Dancing Horses"), and the Smiths ("Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want"). These era-defining sides certainly help make lukewarm additions like New Order's "Shell-Shock," INXS' "Do Wot You Do," and Belouis Some's "Round, Round" easy to get through. And for more marginal new wave fare, there's Jesse Johnson's Prince-inspired "Get to Know Ya" and Danny Hutton's pop/rocker "Wouldn't It Be Good." Topped off by Suzanne Vega's respectable reworking of her hit "Left of Center," Pretty in Pink qualifies as one of the more relevant youth culture soundtracks.

Isolate: The Numa Years is a compilation album by Gary Numan. It contains tracks issued on his own Numa Records label during the years 1984-1986.
One of the founding fathers of synth pop, Gary Numan has influenced countless artists with his constantly evolving form of dystopian electronic rock music since the late 1970s. Establishing a lonely, android-like persona, he rose to fame leading Tubeway Army, a pioneering new wave band whose second album, 1979's Replicas, became the first of Numan's three consecutive gold-selling, chart-topping full-lengths in the U.K. The same year's The Pleasure Principle, his first solo effort, included the perennial favorite "Cars," which remains his biggest worldwide hit…

The famous concert movie by rock band Talking Heads, filmed over four nights in 1983 at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood. The sight of David Byrne wearing a comically oversized white suit in Stop Making Sense has become so iconic that some people who haven't seen this concert film mistakenly believe the Talking Heads frontman is clad that way for the entire performance (he isn't). But the image of Byrne garbed that way has also so matriculated into the general cultural zeitgeist that none other than Nicolas Cage dons a similar outfit (albeit gray this time) in the gonzo finale of Dream Scenario, a film which perhaps not so coincidentally was, like this latest release of this film, put out by those weird and wacky folks at A24.

Digitally remastered 1998 reissue of their second release, 1982's six track remix mini-LP "Non Stop Ecstatic Dancing". Contains new cover art, new liner notes, all of the original tracks & six bonus tracks: extended versions of "Tainted Love / Where Did Our Love Go", "Memorabilia", "What!", "So", "Torch" and "Insecure Me".
Best known for their smash 1981 cover of Gloria Jones' "Tainted Love," which turned the pop-soul tune into a haunting electronic torch song, synth pop duo Soft Cell formed in England in the late '70s. Also remembered as the first project of singer/songwriter Marc Almond, he and producer/multi-instrumentalist Dave Ball released four U.K. Top 20 albums together between 1981 and 1984 before pursuing separate music careers. Soft Cell eventually reunited in the early 2000s, releasing Cruelty Without Beauty in 2002, which produced a Top 40 U.K. hit in "The Night." The duo performed a farewell show at London's O2 Arena in 2018.

Although they released three full albums, a number of EPs and a seemingly endless stream of compilations, Soft Cell will always and forever be known as "the duo who did 'Tainted Love'." This obscure R&B single, given a techno-trash workover by singer Marc Almond and keyboardist Dave Ball, was an enormous hit on both sides of the Atlantic and has been revived endlessly ever since its 1981 release.

For those whose exposure to Soft Cell has been limited to the glorious and inescapable "Tainted Love," the duo's 1984 swan song This Last Night in Sodom should feature a warning sticker. Singer Marc Almond and keyboardist Dave Ball don't attempt to recapture the Top 40 magic of that hit here. Instead, Almond completes his transformation into an electro-pop Scott Walker, operatically singing self-conscious and jaded songs like "Mr. Self-Destruct," "Little Rough Rhinestone," and "Meet Murder My Angel," while Ball's keyboards explore an icy, nearly Germanic abstraction (in the Kraftwerk/Neu! sense). Anyone intrigued by the prospect of faux-decadent torch songs in the Piaf/Brel tradition should be interested in this electronic hybrid of the style, but if you're looking for "Tainted Love, Pt. 2," it isn't here.

Yes' 90125 was a departure from their progressive style but it introduced the band to a new generation of fans, reaching No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and No. 16 on the U.K. albums chart. Recorded in London and Paris in 1977, this conceptual, mostly instrumental LP employs a lot of futuristic sci-fi imagery and is quite high-tech for its time. Synthesizer-dominated instrumentals like "Air Force" and "Running in the City" give the impression that Jean-Philippe Iliesco, the album's producer, had been paying close attention to German innovators like Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder-and yet, Deliverance has a high-tech energy of its own. In the U.S., this record was ignored by radio programmers, but European dance clubs found that the album's faster material was great for moving bodies. At times, Deliverance ends up sounding like European movie music and fades into the background. But when Space hits its mark, Deliverance is both interesting and infectious.

Although Yazoo split in 1984, it wasn't until 15 years later that a substantial compilation album appeared. Only Yazoo: The Best Of represents some of the best synth pop ever committed to record, and provides a fine display of the range and power of Alison Moyet's incredible voice. All of the singles are present (with the exception of "The Other Side of Love"), as well as a handful of quality album tracks. Thankfully, the Francois Kevorkian mix of "Situation" is included, as well as three "1999" mixes. These modern mixes don't reach the same heights as the originals, and the Todd Terry remix of "Don't Go" almost manages to ruin a beautiful song. However, for the most part, Only Yazoo is close to perfect. Tracks like "Nobody's Diary" remain landmarks of pop songwriting, although the sparse arrangements sometimes sound dated. Even so, it's a great album, and a fine overview of Yazoo's brief career.

Thomas Dolby’s brand of introspective synth-pop and often funk-infused songs, rich ineloquent storytelling, has had a multi-dimensional influence in the electronic music world since establishing his career in the 1980s. Known for his hugely successful “She Blinded Me With Science” and “Hyperactive”, Dolby is widely regarded as having a musically polymathic and singular talent. It was with THE FLAT EARTH, Dolby’s second album, released in 1984, where he enriched and developed his signature synth keyboard sound. Peaking at No. 14 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 25 on Billboard’s album chart in the US, the album encompasses a host of influences, with hints of nostalgic jazz, funk-tinged Motown R&B and pan-global sounds. Led by the Top 20 UK single “Hyperactive”, critics were effusive about the album’s lush sound and maturity of its lyrical themes.
