In spite of all the reasons to be angry in this world of ours, Naïssam Jalal has chosen not to seethe, but to soothe. The flute player, composer and singer has relentlessly created music which taps into her instinctive strength. Healing Rituals could be considered as a formal climax – the quintessence of what the musician has been after. Her whispered art is a true ritual, drawing inspiration from traditional cultures and customs, especially the way they have been used throughout life to soothe and heal. The invisible realm is a recurring theme of Naïssam Jalal’s art, and one for which she was crowned in 2019 at the Victoires du Jazz. Her own reconnexion with the spiritual world lies at the root of these Healing Rituals, which bring together Egyptian, Moroccan and American traditions, aiming at collective grace.

Blessed with a distinctive, flexible voice and genre-bending taste, Mississippi-born singer Cassandra Wilson is one of the best and most celebrated jazz singers of her generation. Influenced by the innovative styles of Betty Carter, Shirley Horn, and Nina Simone, Wilson emerged from Steve Coleman's M-Base Collective in the late '80s as a highly individualistic performer. Although she is an adept interpreter of the standards and blues-based jazz tradition, she's equally at home reinventing the songs of folk, pop, and country artists like Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Hank Williams, and the Beatles.

Sticky Wicked is a Dutch electric jazz fusion group initiated by bassist and composer Peter van Breukelen. He formed an ensemble with Peter Lieberom (sax), Remco van der Sluis (drums), Glenn Black/Guy Nikkels (guitar) and Steven Hupkes/Matthijs Geerts (keys), musicians who individually have played with many of today's great names in jazz and pop. Peter’s own compositions are considered original, fresh, and contemporary. And they are clearly the result of being inspired by decades of the finest in jazz, think Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters, John Scofield and Weather Report.

Mark Dresser, the world's most acclaimed experimental bassist, who has literally written the book on extended contrabass techniques, presents a fabulous CD of solo bass music. Featuring his dear friend, the honored poet Jerome Rothenberg (then 91 years old) on one long epic track, this project continues a long tradition that goes back to the 1950s jazz-poetry experiments of Kerouac, Ginsberg, Patchen, and Ferlinghetti. Close friends and colleagues for decades, the telepathy between Mark and Jerome is both palpable and inspiring. A classic!

Julian Lage and Gyan Riley have a magical rapport, a deep mutual respect, and have recorded some of Zorn's most melodious and intimate compositions. In addition to the many books of music written for their trio with Bill Frisell, they have also worked together as a duo on The Bagatelles (2015), Midsummer Moons (2017), Book Beri'ah (2019), and Quatrain (2023). For this fifth duo CD Zorn turns again to William Shakespeare for inspiration and has composed a varied collection of ballads, dances, lullabies, and fantasies that will delight, stimulate, and inspire. Her Melodious Lay contains nine poetic, through-composed pieces that blend classical, folk, jazz, film music, and more into a strikingly dramatic musical vision. Modern guitar music at its very best!

Clarence Penn has been one of the most dynamic drummers in jazz since his New York City arrival 33 years ago. His work with Wynton Marsalis, Betty Carter, Diane Reeves and Michael Brecker has been extensively documented, as have his own musical explorations, including 2014's Monk: The Lost Files. Behind the Voice goes a whole new direction as Penn unfurls inventive reimaginings of the works of influential drummers behind some of the greatest pop music created. Songs by Phil Collins, Levon Helm, Stevie Wonder, Peter Gabriel and Dave Grohl receive expansive modern treatments through Penn's production along with a bevy of collaborators, including vocalists Kurt Elling, Aaron Marcellus and Toku, guitarists Adam Rogers and Gilad Hekselman, and many more. "…a celebration of their artistry, their passion, and their indelible mark on the music we cherish."

With his second Origin release, Jared Hall directs his attention to the influences that first kindled and then nourished and sustained his life path as a trumpeter/composer. Thoughts of Woody Shaw, Tom Harrell, Wallace Roney and others provided the inspiration for the eight original compositions, along with Gigi Gryce's "Minority," while their adventurous spirits, technical brilliance and commitment to a voice infuse the performances by Hall's quartet. Miami-based, Grammy-winning pianist Tal Cohen's exhilarating interplay along with the dynamic lift from Seattle's Michael Glynn on bass and drummer John Bishop launches "Song for Shaw" with a '70's momentum. They deliver an expansive warmth on "Dear Roy" for Hall to reflect on Roy Hargrove within, and the tribute to his main mentor Brian Lynch, "Professor B.L.," is imbued with a Latin-tinged fire.

Celebrating the life and resilience of his 88-year-old mother, composer Dr. Anthony Branker’s 10th Origin release is a gift to Joan Branker who has been mightily challenged by the ongoing cognitive decline of dementia. Conceptualized after witnessing how her face would brighten and her body would start to move when listening to his earlier music, he was driven to re-imagine 11 of these compositions, along with “If,” written by his daughter at 11, for his brilliant ensemble, Imagine. Saxophonist Donny McCaslin, trumpeter Philip Dizack, pianist Fabian Almazan, bassist Linda May Han Oh, drummer Rudy Royston, guitarist Pete McCann, and vocalist Aubrey Johnson, each bring inspired musicianship and deep soul to the lyrical flow, ingenious rhythmic interplay, and spirited performances that have come to define Branker’s projects. “Songs My Mom Liked” is yet another engrossing project and celebration of life, from the mind and pen of Anthony Branker.

Released in 1982, Middle Class White Boy was Mose Allison's first recording in six years, and his debut for the fledgling and relatively short-lived Elektra Musician label run by Bruce Lundvall. Allison is featured here in a sextet setting. His fellow front-line players are saxophonist Joe Farrell and guitarist Phil Upchurch. The set is a well-blended collection of originals and covers including Muddy Waters' "Rollin' Stone," and Duke Ellington's "Just a Lucky So and So." As is his trademark, Allison effortlessly blends jazz, backwoods blues, and Southern hipster jive in a heady brew of fantastic musicianship. His work on electric and acoustic piano here is as startling as ever and his songwriting is canny, wildly swinging, funny, and biting.

The wide tapestry of sounds on 'Inside Out' reflects many of Richard's musical influences as a pianist. He has always strived to find his own voice when it comes to composition and improvisation, and this comes into focus with the music recorded here. The album features Richard's original compositions and two arrangements of tunes penned by the legendary Carla Bley. The album blends intricate melodies, evocative harmonies and energetic grooves alongside pieces where space becomes the sonic focus. When the band plays as a trio there is always a sense of exploration and freedom within the music and this feeling is what makes this band, and this record, a special one.
