Barbra Streisand makes a point of noting that she completed this, her second Christmas album, before the tragic events of September 11, 2001, even going so far as to list the recording dates (July 19-September 7, 2001). And listening to the disc, you can see why. If great artists sometimes demonstrate an uncanny ability to take the temperature of the times with their work, this one can be said to have anticipated the dramatic change in mood that the terrorist attacks occasioned. Christmas music always mixes the celebratory with the nostalgic, some of its classic songs dating from the World War II era when families were separated and feared they might not be reunited. But Streisand's Christmas Memories accentuates that tone well into melancholy.

If Simply Streisand, which appeared earlier the same month as A Christmas Album, indicated that Streisand was overly reverent when it came to standards, reverence was no problem with seasonal fare. You don't necessarily look for unusual interpretations of your Christmas music; you just want those old favorites sung well, and for the most part, that's what you got from Streisand. She did lead off with "Jingle Bells?" into which she injected some of her trademark humor while performing at a breakneck pace. Marty Paich arranged and conducted the secular songs like "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and "White Christmas," which occupied side one, while Ray Ellis handled the religious material on side two. But both were traditional in their charts, and Streisand gave her singing just enough personality without getting in the way of the familiar songs. They were trying to make a timeless classic, and that's what they achieved.

With her highly resonant and sophisticated vocal prowess, charismatic personality, and strongly independent spirit, Barbra Streisand rose to fame as one of the most creatively and commercially successful performers of her lifetime. As a singer, Streisand's rise was remarkable not only because her popularity was achieved in the face of a dominant musical trend – rock & roll – which she did not follow, but also because she used her vocal skills as a stepping stone to other careers, as a stage and film actress and as a film director.

Billed as both a Barbra Streisand album and as an original motion picture soundtrack, Yentl contains the songs, sung by Streisand and written by Michel Legrand and Alan and Marilyn Bergman, that the character played by Streisand sings as internal monologues in the film, sometimes with spoken dialogue interspersed. (The album is filled out by "studio versions" of two of the songs, "The Way He Makes Me Feel" and "No Matter What Happens," played on contemporary electronic instruments, rather than in the orchestral settings used for the rest of the songs.)

"The Third Album" was the 3rd album that Mike Berniker produced for Barbra Streisand at Columbia Records. He explained to the press how, in just a few short years, Streisand had grown as a vocalist: “There used to be an edge on the top of her voice,” he said, “but now that edge is gone. She's still pushing just as hard, but it's not as evident as it used to be. In her third album, her new one, there's a real serenity - at least, for Streisand it's serenity.” After marrying Elliott Gould and finishing up a series of West Coast concerts, Barbra Streisand returned to New York City in the Fall of 1963 where she began to record songs for her third album. Barbra attended two recording sessions, working on songs with arrangements by Peter Matz and Ray Ellis.

The Essential Barbra Streisand (retitled The Ultimate Collection in some European countries) is the fifth greatest hits album by American singer Barbra Streisand, released on January 29, 2002, by Columbia Records. The compilation features 38 songs from Streisand's catalog, in addition to two previously unreleased tracks (covers of "Someday My Prince Will Come" and "You'll Never Walk Alone"). It includes material from 26 of the singer's albums and was described as a collection of, mainly, her pop songs. Critically, the album was noted for being a comprehensive and complete view of her discography, unlike her previous greatest hits releases. It topped the charts in Ireland, Scotland, and the United Kingdom, and peaked at number 15 on the Billboard 200 in the United States. The Essential Barbra Streisand also reached the top ten in several countries and was included on four year-end lists. The album has since been certified Platinum in Australia, Europe, New Zealand, Spain, and the United States, and multi-platinum in the United Kingdom.

"Lazy Afternoon" is the 17th studio album recorded by American singer Barbra Streisand. It was released on October 14, 1975 by Columbia Records. Following a mixed critical response to her previous studio album, "ButterFly" (1974), the singer began working with new musicians for the project. Recorded in April 1975 in Los Angeles, "Lazy Afternoon" contains pop standards. Producer Rupert Holmes wrote three songs on the album, and co-wrote a fourth, "By the Way", with Streisand. She also included a few cover songs, such as Four Tops' "Shake Me, Wake Me (When It's Over)", Stevie Wonder's "You and I", and Libby Holman's "Moanin' Low". The album received generally favorable reviews from music critics who agreed that it was more exciting than "ButterFly". Commercially, the album peaked at #12 on the United States, #42 in Canada, and #84 in Australia. It was later certified Gold by the RIAA.

"The Broadway Album" is the 24th studio album by director, composer, actress and singer Barbra Streisand, released by Columbia Records on November 4, 1985. Consisting mainly of classic show tunes, the album marked a major shift in Barbra Streisand's career. Streisand had spent ten years appearing in musicals and singing standards on her albums in the 1960s. Beginning with the album "Stoney End" in 1971 and ending with the album "Emotion" in 1984, Streisand sang mostly rock, pop, folk, and disco-oriented songs for Columbia Records. Noted Broadway composer Stephen Sondheim personally penned additional lyrics for the songs "Putting It Together" and "Send in the Clowns" on request of the singer. The album, originally released on the Columbia label and subsequently re-released by Columbia and Sony Records, was a critical and commercial success. First certified Gold by the RIAA on January 13, 1986, it reached four times Platinum on January 31, 1995.
