After recording the classic For Django and Catch Me sets for Pacific Jazz, guitarist Joe Pass got stuck recording commercial material for that label's subsidiary World Pacific. This LP finds Pass and a clearly bored Chet Baker (on flügelhorn) performing some of Bob Florence's duller arrangements for an orchestra and distracting background voices. The music consists of then-current and now mostly forgotten pop tunes (Eliot Tiegel in the liner notes raves about how great the songs are) including "It Was a Very Good Year," "What Now My Love," "The Phoenix Love Theme," and the one tune still remembered, "Dindi." Pass has a few worthwhile spots, but is often cut off by the singers or the overly tight charts. A historical curiosity at best.

This two-fer from Dutton Vocalion features a pair of out of print Ronnie Aldrich LPs: The World of Burt Bacharach and Webb Country, originally issued in 1972 and 1977, respectively. These 21 tracks are dominated by Muzak versions of popular songs of the era written by Bacharach and Hal David and include "(They Long to Be) Close to You," "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head," and "This Guy's in Love with You." The remaining tunes are from the songbook of Jimmy Webb and include "MacArthur Park," "Wichita Lineman," and "Up, Up and Away." This is an enjoyably relaxing reissue from Aldrich's deleted catalog on London Records.

Locked out of the singles charts for the past seven years, Shirley Bassey finally returned with this collection of "contemporary" standards, including her British Top Five single "Something." (Bassey, who first heard the song when Peggy Lee sang it, apparently didn't even know it was a Beatles tune until just before recording it.) To parallel the modern material, Johnny Harris' arrangements add an upfront electric bass and hang-loose drumkit to the heavy strings and brass. Of course, Bassey was never a jazz singer, so she makes the transition from traditional pop to contemporary rock with an ease more comparable to Barbra Streisand than Peggy Lee. There are a few jazzy rock standards ("Light My Fire," "Spinning Wheel," "Something") plus plenty of latter-day show tunes ("Easy to Be Hard," "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life,") and a few '60s vocal pieces ("The Sea and Sand," "My Way," "Yesterday When I Was Young")…

2010 release, the 12th album in an infamous career, Not Music is part of Tim Gane's 2007 science experiment involving improvised chord sequences played on piano or vibraphone, over top of which were placed little drum loops. This was a new way of writing and it yielded a bumper crop of compositions, nearly 70 of which were boiled down into 32 new songs, 14 of which were cherry-picked to form Chemical Chords.
