The Supremes got off to a slow start in the early 1960s, but their name soon became a self-fulfilling prophecy. Synonymous with virtually every term with which they're classified – Motown act, girl group, pop-soul, and soul, absolutely soul – their unparalleled legacy was built by Florence Ballard, Mary Wilson, and Diana Ross, the most successful of the group's many lineups. Partnered with the songwriting/production team Holland-Dozier-Holland, these three women topped the Billboard pop chart ten times from 1964 through 1967 with eternal classics such as "Where Did Our Love Go," "Baby Love," "Stop! In the Name of Love," and "You Keep Me Hanging On," and in the process set a new standard for glamour.

When Diana Ross turned to the then lava-hot Chic Organization in late 1979 to produce her, she made one of the smartest moves of her career. Ms Ross was seen as somewhat past her best by this time; she had been a star for best part of 20 years with a diva-esque reputation and three children. Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards' had only been stars for little over two years. It was clear to them both that in order to move forward, Ross had to be turned upside down, come out of the superstar bubble she was in, and most importantly, to have fun again.

"Diana Ross" (later reissued rarely as "Ain't No Mountain High Enough") was the debut solo album for Diana Ross. It reached #19 in the USA (#1 R&B) and sold over 500,000 copies. The album was the ultimate test to see if the former Supremes frontwoman could make it as a solo act. With the help of the songwriting-producing team of Nickolas Ashford & Valerie Simpson, Ross turned out a successful album. Ross did extensive work with other producers before settling with Ashford & Simpson, including Johnny Bristol, producer of her final single with The Supremes, "Someday We'll Be Together". Bristol here produces "These Things Will Keep Me Loving You" (which was a UK hit when originally recorded by The Velvelettes); the rest of the LP is fully written and produced by Ashford & Simpson.

The Supremes, the most commercially successful girl group in pop history, were one of the jewels in Motown Records' artist stable. Given wonderful material by Motown's amazing songwriters, the group scored numerous number one pop hits, as did singer Diana Ross when she left the group and went solo, and Motown's bright, modern, and uptown image as a label had a lot to do with way these ladies gracefully and elegantly presented themselves and took over a song. Dozen of those number one hits, both as the Supremes and as Ross solo, are collected here, including the timeless classics "Come See About Me," "You Can't Hurry Love," "You Keep Me Hangin' On," and "Stop! In the Name of Love."
