Philadelphia International Records (PIR) was an American record label based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1971 by songwriting and production duo Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff along with their longtime collaborator Thom Bell. It was known for showcasing the Philadelphia soul music genre (also known as Philly soul) that was founded on the gospel, doo-wop and soul music of the time. This sound later marked a prominent and distinct era within the R&B genre. During the 1970s, the label released a string of worldwide hits that emphasized lavish orchestral instrumentation, heavy bass and driving percussion. Some of their most popular and best selling acts included the O'Jays, Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, Teddy Pendergrass, MFSB, Billy Paul, Patti LaBelle and Lou Rawls. Between 1971 and the early 1980s, the label released more than 170 gold and platinum records. Philadelphia International Records had been mostly defunct since 1987 and finally shut down in 2001. As of 2007, Sony Music Entertainment owns all rights to the Philadelphia International Records catalogue.

Roger Daltrey - Best Of Rockers & Ballads (1991)

Roger Daltrey - Best Of Rockers & Ballads (1991)
FLAC (tracks) - 421 MB

The Best of Rockers & Ballads is an adequate overview of Roger Daltrey's solo offerings of the 1970s, taking the best work from his rather inconsistent career as a musician outside of the Who. Although his albums didn't achieve the prosperity that he and the rest of his fans might have expected, some of his material fit in quite nicely with the singer/songwriter formula of the decade. The 17 tracks are taken mainly from his self-titled debut album, 1975's Ride a Rock Horse, and 1977's One of the Boys. And, as this collection illustrates, most of Daltrey's better songs are ones that have been written by other artists. Murray Head's "Say It Ain't So Joe" and Russ Ballard's "Free Me" are two of his most passionate efforts, while both of the Leo Sayer-penned tracks, "It's a Hard Life" and "Giving It All Away," spotlight Daltrey's vocal strength. "Without Your Love" is the most beautiful ballad of the set, and represents his only Top 40 hit, going to number 20 in 1980. Average sounding rockers like "Walking the Dog" and "One of the Boys" are energetic enough, but they don't instill the enthusiasm that Roger Daltrey is capable of. Other compilations that are available offer up most of these songs, but add his more solid post-1980 contributions from Under a Raging Moon and a few of the better cuts from the disastrous Can't Wait to See the Movie and the Parting Should Be Painless album. Even so, Best of Rockers & Ballads is more of an entertaining listen (and more of a convenience) than embarking on Daltrey's solo albums.

Claudio Abbado was undeniably the supreme Mahler conductor of our time. With his Lucerne Festival Orchestra he has set new standards in the field of classical music, especially in the interpretation of works by Gustav Mahler. The core of the orchestra is provided by the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, itself an élite body of players. Soloists like violinist Kolja Blacher, clarinettist Sabine Meyer, oboist Albrecht Mayer, violist Wolfram Christ, cellist Natalia Gutman, the Hagen Quartet and members of the Alban Berg Quartet to name just a few, make the Lucerne Festival Orchestra a star-studded ensemble.

In a kind of High Baroque version of the duelling guitars from the film ‘Deliverance’, Alba have contrived to set Heinrich Biber and Georg Muffat against each other as rivals in a virtual virtuoso set-piece. The evidence for this is perhaps a little thin, but what is true is that both of these almost exact contemporaries worked for a while at the same time in the Court of the Prince-Archbishop of Salzburg. This period in the 1670s and 1680s gives rise to the not unreasonable speculation that there was a “rivalry that in all probability existed between them for the favour of their influential employer”, presumably with the ambition of ending up as Hofkapellmeister.

The Transcendental Études form a cycle of twelve pieces whose composition began in 1826 and was completed in 1851. Starting from the idea of an encyclopædic collection which, in the manner of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, Liszt’s Transcendental Études became something of a seismograph of his compositional aesthetic, first strongly under the influence of Paganini, later more in the style of character pieces.

Alice Ader’s first Debussy disc (Erato) won all the awards in the specialist press on its release twenty years ago and is still regarded as an unequalled benchmark. Now this unconventional pianist at last unveils her recording of the complete Ravel piano works. And what better moment could there be than Debussy Year to present these two hours or so of music in dialogue, en Miroirs as it were, with the œuvre of ‘Claude de France’? Ravel, the hot-blooded Swiss watchmaker, the discreet Lisztian, the mediocre pianist who made such extreme demands on his colleagues, the man of so many sublime paradoxes, deserves only the finest interpreters: those who take the time to explore his deepest recesses. Alice Ader, light-years away from the flashy gestures often encountered in this music, takes us to the very heart of one of the most secretive composers of his time.

Marathon marked the addition of keyboard player Alan Pasqua and singer Greg Walker's replacement by singer/guitarist Alex Ligertwood in the Santana lineup. Otherwise, the album was notable for consisting entirely of band-written material, although those songs were in the established R&B/rock style evolved on albums like Amigos, Festival, and Inner Secrets.

Combined with the previous recording of Opus III and V, this publication completes the oeuvre of cello sonatas by Emanuel Siprutini. Born in a Jewish family, perhaps in Holland, he ar-rived in England following the "Jewish naturalization act" established in 1753 by King George II of England, and he settled in London as a wine merchant, concert performer and cello teacher, having among his students John Crosdill, the most famous British cellist of the eighteenth century. Leopold Mozart met Siprutini in 1764, during his stay in England. Struck by the cellist's talent, he tried to convince him to con-vert to Catholicism, but Emanuel remained serenely Jewish. Between 1756 and 1775 he published four books of cello sonatas which the Mozarts certainly owned, as one might think by finding fragments and ideas in Wolfgang's most beautiful works.

The composer Toshi Ichiyanagi is, needless to say, also a pianist. We have collected recordings of his performances demonstrating his superb skills and ability. "Music for Piano No. 8," on which he is accompanied by Sumihisa Arima, a frequent collaborator, on electronic devices, is particularly noteworthy. His cool-headed improvisation in the gallery reminds us of David Tudor, with whom he shares a deep resonance as a pianist. A rare recording of Sylvano Bussotti's "Five Piano Pieces for David Tudor," which was written specifically for Tudor, has also been recovered!

Warmen was for many years something like a solo project with band character of the former Children Of Bodom keyboardist Janne "Warman" Wirman. Warmen 2023 provide with their musical reorientation for a maximum ab variety - and not expected hardness. In the past, Warmen had guest singers who played in the band's the new band claim and the new musical orientation should be made clear also vocally. should be made clear vocally. The new, like a fist on an eye fitting man at the microphone is none other than Petri Lindroos from Ensiferum! Here For None heralds a new era - freely following the motto "The king is dead, long live the king" Warmen are not only musically setting out for new, heavier shores - due to the new line-up it can be rightly said that Warmen are now that Warmen now take over the musical heritage of Janne's former band (Children Of Bodom) in a spectacular way.
