Like them, Le Bret alternates dances and character pieces. On the other hand, he makes no concessions to the taste for pastoral and country music, does not seem influenced by opera music, and does not overdo descriptive effects and virtuosity. All in all, Le Bret remains faithful to the subtle and poetic language of the harpsichord; as he says in his preface, he has ‘always endeavored in composing them to adorn them with the most graceful songs, knowing from our most illustrious masters that this is the beauty of this instrument.’ As Simone El Oufir Pierini observes in his booklet essay for this album, one evident example of Le Bret’s knowledge of ‘our most illustrious masters’ arises in the piece titled L’Embarassante, a stylish homage to Les Cyclopes by Rameau.

Music for ‘The Cardinal King’: the only complete available recording of an engaging chamber-collection from 18th-century Rome, written for the head of a renegade English Catholic family in exile.Several previous Brilliant Classics albums have given notice of the under-appreciated gifts of Carlo Tessarini (1690-1766). Collections of his violin and flute sonatas have revealed a consistently inspired and stylish voice, reliably well-turned melodies and shapely instrumental parts rewarding players and listeners alike. The same qualities illuminate this collection of five Allettamenti da Camera, composed in Rome in 1740 and dedicated to His Royal Highness Henry Duke of York. By that stage in his career, the Rimini-born Tessarini had worked for courts and aristocratic patrons in Venice and Urbino. He had lately moved south to Rom

A selection of Richard Strauss’s most-loved lieder and songs, and Elisabeth’s arias from Wagner’s Tannhäuser, the role in which Lise Davidsen will make her debut at Bayreuth Festival. Plus Ariadne’s aria from Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos: her 2017 Glyndebourne debut in the title role was named “one of those ‘I was there’ moments” (The Times).
Also includes Strauss’s iconic Four Last Songs, originally premiered by Decca’s Kirsten Flagstad. Recorded with the Philharmonia Orchestra, who performed the premiere of the Four Last Songs, and Finnish conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen.

Director of music to the Darmstadt court, Graupner's output almost equalled that of Telemann and certainly surpassed that of J.S. Bach: he composed a number of operas, many concertos and orchestral suites, chamber music, keyboard works and more than 1400 church cantatas. Almost the entire body of Graupner’s work has survived in autograph but hardly any of his compositions were published during his lifetime or afterwards. Fortunately they were not burnt after his death as he himself wished, but were the subject of a legal dispute between the landgrave and Graupner’s heirs. Thanks to this the complete archive was taken to a place outside the city and thus spared a second burning, as very little of the old city of Darmstadt would be spared during the Second World War.

Transfigured Night brings together two outstanding composers associated with Vienna: Joseph Haydn and Arnold Schoenberg. The former is often seen as the oldest representative of the First Viennese School, whereas the latter founded the Second Viennese School, using the classicism of his predecessors to explore new, atonal musical paths into the twentieth century. By combining Haydns two cello concertos (in C-major and D-major) and Schoenbergs symphonic poem Verklärte Nacht in the 1943 edition for string orchestra this album sheds a new, fascinating light on both Viennese masters.

Strife formed in 1971 and were gigging regularly by the end of that year. In February 1972, they recorded a live album at Wall City Club at Quaintways, Chester. It was never released. When an album finally emerged in 1975, it contained the most popular numbers from their stage act. They went on to record a second album Back To Thunder in 1978, featuring Don Airey on keyboards.

Boccherini was born in the Tuscan city of Lucca in 1743. He was the third child of Maria Santa and of Leopoldo Boccherini. Having received his first musical instruction from Leopoldo, Luigi, became a student of music at the local seminary, where he met Abbot Vannucci, an appreciated professor of cello, of harmony, and of counterpoint. Luigi’s progress was steady and quick, and already at thirteen he was employed as a cellist at theatres and churches of his birth city.

Southern Cross was an Austalian heavy rock band formed by ex-Buffalo members Alan Milano and John Baxter. Milano was co-vocalist on Dead Forever while John Baxter was responsible for Buffalo's heavy rock guitar sound. By the time this recording came about Baxter had left to be replaced by Bruce Cumming. Alongside the likes of Finch, The Angels, Kevin Borich Express, Rose Tattoo, and Chariot, Southern Cross swiftly became one of the most popular hard rock bands on the Sydney scene. They were signed to the independent Living Sound/Laser label where they issued their debut single towards the end of 1976, followed by their self-titled debut album in early 1977. The album features melodic, raunchy hard rock in the vein of Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs and UK band Bad Company. It mixed flat out riff-rockers with moody rock ballads…

The surviving work of a mystery composer from the late French Baroque, in a new recording by a highly accomplished young early-music keyboardist.Nothing is known of Le Bret beyond the volume of keyboard pieces reproduced here, which analysis of both musical style and ancillary details has dated to the 1730s or 1740s. Whoever he was, Le Bret was clearly inspired by François Couperin and Jean-Philippe Rameau, and his style is comparable to that of the harpsichordists who followed in their footsteps between 1720 and 1740, such as Jean-François Dandrieu, François d'Agincourt, Joseph Bodin de Boismortier, Bernard de Bury and Jacques Duphly in his first two books.

With new John Lee Hooker songs, new versions of old Hooker songs, four duets with and a new song by Van Morrison, Don't Look Back continues the venerable bluesman's string of excellent albums in his '90s renaissance. Produced by Morrison, it also celebrates the 25th anniversary of their first recording together, as Morrison guested on Hooker's seminal Never Get Out of These Blues Alive in 1972. Don't Look Back hits the ground running with a rowdy, thumpin' remake of "Dimples" with Los Lobos; "Spellbound" pounds out more of Hooker's stylistic trademark - throbbing, raw, hard-driving boogie. The Morrison tracks include the ruminative title cut and his haunting "The Healing Game." Hooker also gives Hendrix's classic blues "Red House" his own rough-hewn, distinctive treatment.

Eugene Ormandy Over a period of four decades, from the 1940s until the beginning of the '80s, Eugene Ormandy was a mainstay of the classical music world. As music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra for more than 40 years, beginning in 1938, he was one of the most popular conductors in America, and his recordings with that orchestra on the Columbia Masterworks label consistently outsold by a wide margin the recordings of the admittedly superior New York Philharmonic under Dimitri Mitropoulos.

The four-years-in-the-making follow-up to Yes' comeback album, 90125, Big Generator was also a million-selling hit, although not as successful as its predecessor, probably because the singles "Love Will Find a Way" (number 30) and "Rhythm of Love" (number 40) couldn't match "Owner of a Lonely Heart" from the previous LP, even if they were favorites on AOR radio at the time. Actually, it was the title track that was a carbon copy of "Owner," so maybe that was the problem. More likely, though, "Owner" was a one-shot (courtesy of producer Trevor Horn), and as Yes asserted itself more here, the band reverted more to its old style, making for some confusion. Nevertheless, this album was Yes' last major hit.

Though Björk has written music for films before, her collaboration with Matthew Barney on Drawing Restraint 9 is a much deeper and more natural pairing, which makes sense, considering that they're partners in life (and now in art). Björk's pieces for the film reflect its fusions of the contemporary with the ancient, and the organic with the technological - themes that she has dealt with in her own work, especially on later albums like Medúlla. The motif of West meeting East is also prominent in the visual and musical halves of Drawing Restraint 9: shot in Nagasaki Bay, the film depicts a pair of occidental guests (played by Barney and Björk) who visit a Japanese whaling ship and evolve into whales to escape drowning when a storm hits…
