Olli Ahvenlahti - Bandstand (1975). Sweet keys from 70s Finland - a great little set that's filled with jazzy work on electric piano and clavinet! Keyboardist Olli Ahvenlahti has a touch that's as warm and soulful as some of his counterparts on the American fusion scene - an approach that's not nearly as jamming or rock-influenced as some of the other European keyboardists of the 70s, and which is carried off here with a gliding, soaring approach to the groove! Olli's group on the set features trumpet and sax in the frontline - shading in the tunes with qualities similar to some of the most righteous work done on keyboard sets for Muse or Strata East in the 70s - funky one minute, cosmic the next, with tight head arrangements that state the colors of the tunes, then break into freer solos…

Supply, Demand & Curve was an Irish progressive rock group from Dublin active during the 70's consisting of musicians like composer Roger Doyle (featured in the likes of electronic groups like Fovea Hex), Brian Masterson, Jolyon Jackson, Paddy Finney, Greg Boland (of Moving Hearts),Paul McAteer, Fran Breen and Rosemarie Taylor. The group started out under the name Jazz Therapy and lasted until 1977 with only one released album which musically shares some of the jazz and folk sensibilities with the more accessible progressive rock bands in the Canterbury scene.

Coming on the heels of his departure from The Faces, A NIGHT ON THE TOWN was Rod Stewart's first solo album. With his usual collaborator Ron Wood now a member of the Rolling Stones, Stewart gathered together an impressive group of backing musicians that included Steve Cropper, Duck Dunn and Al Jackson of Booker T & The MG's, Joe Walsh, the Tower Of Power horn section and multi-instrumentalist David Lindley…

Pavlov's Dog lead singer David Surkamp was everything that was wrong with the band's Columbia debut Pampered Menial. Tempered here by Blue Oyster Cult producers Murray Krugman and Sandy Pearlman, who also recorded the first disc, the sound is more appealing to the ear. The question is, where was it going? Too pop for progressive rock, and too progressive for Top 40, the music is driving and more focused the second time around. There are some heavy guests to add to the festivities, Roxy Music's sax player Andy Mackay along with drummer William Bruford and Arista sax player Michael Brecker, though the tracks they appear on are not designated…

In some ways, it's easy to think of A Night on the Town, Rod Stewart's second album for Warner, as a reprisal of the first, cut with many of the same musicians as Atlantic Crossing, produced once again by Tom Dowd, and even following its predecessor's conceit of having a "Slow Side" and "Fast Side" (granted, this flips the two around, opening with the slow one first)…

`Deep Cuts' is a mixed bag of styles and genres arranged in an accessible and easy to listen format, a collection of shorter and more concise pieces with slight progressive elements throughout. It's full of the usual charm and character of their previous albums, with rich and detailed lyrics and a feeling of sweet sentimentality. It's sophisticated and elegant pop/prog/folk with the expected country leanings and some rockier moments too, with a great balance of acoustic and electric guitar playing…

Between Daevid Allen's departure from the band and Pierre Moerlen's official takeover of the band, there is Shamal. This transitional album contains none of the Allen-inspired psychedelia, but also very little of Moerlen's jazz influence. Shamal is, for the most part, a progressive rock album, half vocal, half instrumental. Its most accessible tune, the opening "Wingful of Eyes," had the potential for airplay if only it hadn't been so lengthy…

Langsyne from Barmen played some sophisticated English-language psych-folk with a large variety of partly exotic instruments like the psaltery, koto, glockenspiel, banjo, flute, slide guitar, or the Jew's harp. Their only LP was released in 1976, as an edition of only 200 copies, and is today sold at a price of about € 1000 to € 2000 in mint condition. It is thus probably the most expensive Krautrock LP except the first edition of "Monster movie" by Can. It contains only self-written tracks. Especially remarkable is that the musical interaction of the three musicians is of somnabulistic perfection. There have been several new editions of "Langsyne", both as LP and as CD, some of them with a bonus track. The Garden of Delights CD has been drawn from the master tapes and contains fifteen bonus tracks, each of them of a perfect sound quality.

Originally released on two vinyl platters in 1976 by Buddah, this set was digitally unleashed anew by the British Sequel label. It faithfully captures the boogie-burning capabilities of the mid-'70s Cotton outfit, fired by its leader's incendiary harp wizardry and Murphy's scintillating licks.

Green Ray (1976). Zanov is one of the great electronic musicians of France of the past and present! Zanov is really Pierre Salkazanov who recorded three albums of electronic music between 1976 and 1983, Green Ray was the very first. He takes a spacy, minimalist approach, utilizing an ARP 2600 plus a VCS-3. Groove Unlimited is proud to re-release this Gem of the French history of Electronic Music!
In Course Of Time (1982). Enigmatic, surreal, futuristic and deeply mysterious are the keywords to best describe Zanov’s 3rd album “In Course Of Time”. Legendary French synthesist Zanov, aka Pierre Salkazanov, already started work on this landmark album before his last concert in Villebon (near Paris) in June 1978, followed by some significant changes in 1979.

Generally considered to be the last must-have recording from these progressive rock giants. Recorded at a frenetic pace, the band had the impossible task of topping their classic, Free Hand. While they didn't surpass the success of previous efforts, they did continue to propel their unique brand of complex music into surprising new directions. Interview is actually a concept album centering on a fictitious interview based upon the music business…

A classic, with spicy and frenetic solos one moment, comic overtones and clever melodies and rhythms the next. The Art Ensemble at this point were becoming stars overseas, and finding the going increasingly tougher in America. It's outside or avant-garde jazz with soul, heart, and funk.

This album has an upbeat feel but it is very funky/ jazz fusion heavy and well composed. Chiefs and Indians is one of my favorite Caravan tunes in general, short but sweet with a nice smooth intro/ outro and an amazing guitar solo. Jack and Jill is another one of my favorites right up there with their classic stuff off Cunning Stunts and Land Of Grey and Pink…

Hard Rain is a snapshot of Bob Dylan's fabled Rolling Thunder Revue, a traveling circus that was more notable for its excess and character than the music. Hard Rain bears this out, being neither as sacrilegious or as exciting as Blood on the Tracks, and never seeming necessary – after all, it arrives just two years after the last live album…

Founded in Düsseldorf, Germany in 1968 - Disbanded in 1981. Originally born as a German-British band, the music of Message oscillates between a substantial heavy rock and a nice folk rock articulated around a range of keyboards arrangements. With a combination of compelling rhythms, first rate compositions and strong playing, Message come up with a winner this time. Murdoch continues his quirky experiments with vibrato-tremolo heavy guitar sound. It adds much of the needed distinction to the whole affair. And there's a greater sense of exploration this time round, making it all feel more "progressive".
