Oliver Nelson meets Eric Dolphy on this frequently exciting sextet session with trumpeter Richard Williams, pianist Richard Wyands, bassist George Duvivier, and drummer Roy Haynes. Although Dolphy is too unique and skilled to be overshadowed in a setting such as this, Nelson holds his own. He contributed five of the six compositions (including "Screamin' the Blues," "The Meetin'," and "Alto-Itis") and effectively matches wits and creative ideas with Dolphy. Olias of Sunhillow is the first studio album by English singer-songwriter and ex-vocalist in the progressive rock band, YES, Jon Anderson. It is a concept album which tells the story of an alien race and their journey to a new world following a volcanic catastrophe on their home planet. Anderson wrote and performed the music himself.

Physical is the ninth full-length studio album by the British-Australian-American singer Olivia Newton-John. The album was produced and partly written by her long-time record producer John Farrar. Recorded and mixed at David J. Holman's studio in Hollywood, California, Physical became one of Newton-John's most controversial and sexual records, and her most successful studio album to date. Musically, the album features considerable use of synthesizers, and it explores lyrical themes such as love and relationships, sex, kinesthetics, and environmental protection. Upon its release, the album received generally positive reviews from music critics, many of them considering it to be Newton-John's best work.

Pianist Alon Goldstein is joined by American chamber music ensemble the Fine Arts Quartet and special guest Rachel Calin on double bass for the world premiere recordings of these chamber versions of two of Mozart’s greatest and most popular piano concertos. To make the two works more accessible to the public, 19th century composer Ignaz Lachner left the piano parts untouched and wrote splendid string quartet transcriptions of the orchestra parts with added bass. These arrangements sound almost as natural as if Mozart had transcribed them himself.

Edmonton folk singer-songwriter Jessica Heine (pronounced hi-na) is about to release her fourth album, Build Again. And it’s going to be a party. The album release show is scheduled for Feb. 3 in Edmonton.

French saxophonist and composer Sylvain Rifflet has his finger firmly set on the pulse of modern times. Working with his group Alphabet, he has masterminded an innovative and spell-binding brand of music in which the modernity of his jazz sound combines with the world of New York minimalism. Poets and writers of the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century often described the then-nascent ''industrial world'' and its machines as ''enemies of art.'' However some did not see progress as dehumanizing. Science fiction imagined a futuristic world, which inspired artists and writers such as Jules Verne and HG Wells. Rifflet's album Mechanics, with a cover illustration by Belgian comic book artist Francois Schuiten, journeys through forward looking and fantastical worlds.

"Crickets" is the eighth album from the Country singer/songwriter, Joe Nichols. The album was produced by Derek George and Mickey Jack Cones. Crickets includes the first single, 'Sunny And 75' as well as a cover of Merle Haggard's 'Footlights'. Thus far, Nichols has produced 14 Top 40 singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts and looks to continue that streak with this album.

The Delphine Trio brings together three passionate young musicians from opposite ends of the globe: Australian clarinettist Magdalenna Krstevska, Dutch cellist Jobine Siekman and pianist Roelof Temmingh, hailing from South Africa. Founded in 2020 at the Royal College of Music, London, the Delphine Trio showcases a combination of individual instrumental talent, intelligent and curious music- making, and a passion for diverse repertoire.

After teasing its release, Burial has finally shared his new two-track EP, Dreamfear/Boy Sent From Above, on XL Recordings. This is the first time that the British producer, whose landmark albums for Hyperdub helped popularize the label in the 2000s, has released his solo music on a different label.

I set myself the challenge of writing a book of 24 preludes and fugues in all the major and minor keys and I approached family, friends, and several institutions I had been associated with, to commission a prelude and fugue each, with many of the resultant commissioners asking for references to pieces of music that had a special meaning for them, a request that I tried to follow through wherever possible. Within a very short space of time, I realised just what a task I had set myself. The project took me 8 years to complete, and it was not until 2019 that I finally put the finishing touches to the concluding B minor Fugue.

The premiere of Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 1 in D minor was a notorious failure. It took until the 1940s for the work to gain recognition, and it contains much that is recognisable from the composer’s later works – brooding intensity, lyricism and yearning, orchestral colour and grandeur, written in a profoundly Russian manner. Unperformed during his lifetime, Prince Rostislav exudes Rachmaninov’s familiar qualities of melancholy and voluptuousness; and both works feature his pervasive use of the Dies irae theme. These acclaimed VOX recordings conducted by Leonard Slatkin were originally issued in 1977 and 1982.
