Milano, Paris, New York: Finding John Lewis is a superb piano trio album by Sir Roland Hanna Trio, dedicated to the classic pianist John Lewis. On this release, Hanna is joined by George Mraz on bass and Lewis Nash on drums. The music here is stylish and alluring.

Art Pepper’s The Way it Was! was recorded for Contemporary between 1956-60, these seven tracks sat dormant in the label's vault until 1972. The album is built around four previously un-released tunes pairing Pepper with the tenor of Warne Marsh. Filling out the program are three incredible tracks from Pepper's masterpieces; Gettin' Together and Intensity (both 1960) plus Meets the Rhythm Section (1957), all of which were left off due to the timing limitations of vinyl. Supported by the likes of Paul Chambers, Philly Joe Jones, Wynton Kelly, Jimmy Cobb and Red Garland, their workouts on the standards “The Man I Love,” “Autumn Leaves” and especially “The Way You Look Tonight” establish a brilliant east-coast meets west-coast summit. Art's creamy alto more than holds it's own with some of New York's bop-elite, resulting in a masterpiece in its own right.

The young Russo-British pianist Yevgeny Sudbin has inspired wildly varying reactions from critics and listeners, and he may be one of those artists whom you simply like or not. His technical skills are unquestioned, and he gets your attention with unusual gestures early on and coherently follows through on them. This collection of Haydn sonatas and other keyboard works, all pretty often played except for the Fantasia in C major, Hob. 17/4, certainly stands out from the crowd.

For his partners in these monumental and almost iconic concertos, Sudbin has chosen the BBC Symphony Orchestra and its chief conductor Sakari Oramo.

The debonair crooner and master of the romantic ballad is in his absolute wheelhouse on this 1990 release which features a smooth and life affirming 10-song set of beautiful love songs and ballads.

Tine Thing Helseth is a Norwegian trumpet soloist specializing in classical repertoire. Since her breakthrough in 2006 with the Eurovision Young Musician Finale, Tine Thing Helseth's development has moved on at an amazing pace. In 2009 she was made a Borletti-Buitoni Fellow, and her diary is now filled with concert dates all over the world. On 'My Heart is Ever Present', Tine teams up once again with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, led by Elise Båtnes. Isa Katharina Gericke joins in for versions of Handel's two showpieces for soprano, trumpet and orchestra, plus "Eg veit i Himmelrik ei Borg" (I know a Castle in Heavens High). And among the all time classics of Bach/Gounod, Holst, Reger and others, Tine also presents a beautiful piece she has written herself: "Engledans" (Angels' dance).

Great Italian trumpeter Flavio Boltro applies his warm and beautiful trumpet sound to standards including "I Remember Clifford", the instrumental written by jazz tenor saxophonist Benny Golson in memory of Clifford Brown, the influential and highly regarded jazz trumpeter who died in an auto accident at the age of 25. Also included are "Whisper Not", "Ceora", "I Can't Get Started", "Mamacita", "There Is No Greater Love", "Nutty", "Con Alma" and Boltro's own "Wasabi Blues". Japanese Venus Records release.

Kitaro crafts this musical journey from the ancient chronicle (Kojiki) that recounts the birth of Japan and it’s people. Featuring the string section from the Skywalker Symphony, along with Kitaro’s signature keyboard and flute sounds, the score to this thematic backdrop is full of passion and beauty that is masterfully conceived, arranged and performed. There are more classical elements on this record, and a more "composed" feel to the songwriting.

Any recording pairing the organ music of César Franck with an instrument by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, the composer and organ builder who jointly reinvigorated the French organ school in the 19th century, ought to be welcome. This new release is, though it doesn’t quite live up to its promising start, in which the young Finnish organist Pétur Sakari lays out the thematic material of Franck’s ‘Fantaisie’ with a sense of both the music’s pensive quality and its sweep. He manages to make this first of the composer’s Trois Pièces, written at the same time (1878) as the organ of the Sainte-Croix Cathedral in Orléans was being built, sound at once improvisatory and rigorously structured. Yet the glories of the other two pieces, the straightforward ‘Cantabile’ and restless ‘Pièce héroïque’, are never fully revealed, perhaps because of the slightly distanced recording of this magnificent Orléans instrument.

Born in 1989 with Swiss, French and Chinese origins, pianist François-Xavier Poizat graduated from the Geneva and Hamburg Conservatory and from the Juilliard School in New York. His journey is sprinkled with collaborations with big orchestras such as the Suisse Romande and Svizzera Italiana Orchestra, the National du Capitole de Toulouse, the Lithuanian and Armenian National Chamber Orchestras, the Zürich Chamber Orchestra and the Poznan Philharmonic, among others. His large solo and chamber music repertoire includes 500 years of music and about thirty concertos, as well as all works with piano by Maurice Ravel, his favorite composer. Beside his principal activity as a performer, he is currently the director of the International Puplinge Classique Festival in Geneva, a position he has held for the past 10 years, and has recorded 4 solo albums with the Naxos, Ars Produktion and Piano Classics labels.

One of the giants of the alto saxophone, Johnny Hodges was perhaps the most important soloist and sideman in Duke Ellington's orchestra from 1928 up to Hodges' death in 1970. The self-taught player made many solo forays during his long career - one of his '50s outfits included a young John Coltrane - but history remembers Hodges for his virtuosic sidemanship, particularly his sensitive rendering of ballads.
