This Billie Holiday album was recorded in March 1959 and released four months later, in July 1959, the same month Holiday died; after her death the album was renamed "Last Recording". Al Cohn on tenor sax and Milt Hinton on bass are among the several notable session musicians in Ray Ellis's Orchestra which provides horn-driven accompaniment on most of this material.

The Danish-German composer Søren Nils Eichberg is the first composer in residence in the history of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. This disc presents the premiere recordings of his Symphony No. 1, the large-scale doomsday vision “Stürzten wir uns ins Feuer” (2006), and of his Symphony No. 2 “Before Heaven, before Earth” (2010), that was first performed by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and concludes an explosive phase of creativity in the young composer.

Eerie content of the music is juxtaposed by dreamy instrumentation, upbeat rhythms and contrasting colourful sounds throughout – for beneath the catchy indie-pop environs this is an anti-war song, depicting the effects of Magon’s forced service. In short, it is a catchy and infectious album that is approaching something akin to Kate Bush meets early Arcade Fire.

Hailing from Zagreb, Croatia, ANIMAL DRIVE were formed in 2012 by Jelusic, who is the primary songwriter and driving force behind the band's sound. Dino was chosen by the late, great Paul O'Neill to tour as a featured vocalist on Trans-Siberian Orchestra's most recent U.S. tour, which is how he crossed paths with Soto and which would ultimately lead to them becoming labelmates. Begun as an acoustic spinoff of the Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna eventually became the full-time focus of founding members Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen, emerging as a popular touring act of the 1970s. The Cinema Show were formed in autumn 2011 as a progressive rock cover band (Pink Floyd, Genesis, PFM, Dream Theater, Transatlantic, Toto…). This fascinating quartet consists of three talented young musicians, pianist Harmen Fraanje, guitarist Nelson Veras, and drummer Matthieu Chazarenc, as well as seasoned veteran Hein Van De Geyn on bass. While only the bassist is likely to be familiar to most savvy jazz fans, the compositions, most of which were written by Fraanje, draw from several fields of music. The title track has a Middle Eastern flavor in the vamp sections, though it quickly segues into a quiet jazz setting.

This 1956 album of standards from Billie Holiday has long been out of print, despite receiving a five star review in DownBeat magazine when released. Holiday was always very demanding about the quality of her musicians and this session was no exception; she is backed by a superb sextet that features Benny Carter on alto sax, Harry “Sweets” Edison on trumpet, Barney Kessel on guitar and Larry Bunker on drums.

The quintessential classic bolero trio, Los Panchos were formed in New York in 1944 by Mexicans Alfredo Bojalil Gil and Chucho Navarro and Puerto Rican Hernando Avilés. The trio's innovative format, which would become a standard of the genre, featured three voices and three guitars, as well as Gil's distinctive use of the Mexican requinto guitar, an instrument he created himself, for all the lead parts. Los Panchos became one of the most famous Latin American musical acts of the 20th century, making their name synonymous with the bolero and exporting the genre all over the world, selling million of records, and appearing in countless films.

Late Canadian jazz musician Rob McConnell's talents as a bandleader, arranger and trombonist are spotlighted on the Juno Award-winning Present Perfect. Notably, on the standard Smoke Gets in Your Eyes, he plays an adventurously off-kilter lead-in to the melody and then delivers a brilliant valve trombone solo. McConnell and his 22-piece brass band (including rhythm and reed sections) recorded this album in 1979 in Toronto and mixed it in Germany.

Award-winning Trombonist-arranger-composer Rob McConnell and his Boss Brass big band was a fixture on the Canadian jazz scene. The group was composed of Canada’s premiere jazz musicians, and many of their over two dozen albums have become collectors’ items for big band enthusiasts world-wide.
