It was in Rome, where he resided between 1707 and 1710, that the young Handel composed these three dazzling sacred works. The Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin and the RIAS Kammerchor give us an extremely lively and colourful reading of these pieces in which the composer showcased his talent: allegiance to the forms of the past, total mastery of counterpoint and, already, a unique feeling for storytelling. Everything here announces musical genius.

PRJCT Amsterdam and its artistic director Maarten Engeltjes present two of the greatest vocal works of the baroque era: Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater and Vivaldi’s Nisi Dominus. While Vivaldi’s virtuosic piece contemplates the helplessness of people when God does not support their efforts, Pergolesi’s portrait of the weeping Mary at the Cross embodies what the “nameless” parents of a deceased child go through. In the Stabat Mater, Engeltjes’s counter-tenor blends together seamlessly and soothingly with Shira Patchornik’s soprano voice, resulting in an interpretation that is both profound and deeply relatable.

This live recording of Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" was made at the Southbank Centre's 2013 The Rest Is Noise Festival in London, a concert series celebrating critic Alex Ross' book "The Rest Is Noise". Always a crowd-pleaser, Orff's secular cantata is full of rhythmic choruses, rollicking dances, and incantatory songs based on medieval texts, and it has become one of the most popular modern works in the choral repertoire. The performance by the London Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra, conducted by Hans Graf, is energetic and vivid, and the solos by soprano Sarah Tynan, tenor Andrew Kennedy, and baritone Rodion Pogossov are full of life and feeling.

Most of us, certainly those of us in North America, experience war from a safe distance, through what we see on television and read in the media, while the reality of war happens far away. Poet Suzanne Steele, however, gained a unique firsthand perspective on war. As Canada’s first War Poet, Steele joined the 1st Battalion Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry in 2009 during the war in Afghanistan, documenting her experiences in her poetry and at warpoet.ca. She saw the fear, the belief, and the sacrifice. She met people who did not come home alive. She met people who did come home, but broken, to a life shattered by post-traumatic stress disorder. She met their families, mourning, powerless. Her writings and experiences–stories we do not see on television or read in the media–provide the foundation for this hour-long concert work with music by Canadian composer Jeffrey Ryan.

Baroque Italy still conceals many works that are too rarely performed. Here, ensemble Le Palais royal brings together Lotti's Credo, Rubino's Lauda Jerusalem, Vivaldi's Laetatus sum and Scarlatti's splendid Stabat Mater. Brilliant, virtuosic and richly ornamented, these pieces were composed for festivities and celebrations, and reflect the effervescence and opulence of the Italian cities of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. Far from the smooth, cold marble, the ensemble's performance on period instruments reveals all the asperities, reliefs and volumes of a language and music that it sculpts like a colourful and sensual material.

“It is my profound belief that one can discover meaning in life by reflecting on death and the evanescence of our existence. It is only by contemplating death and accepting it that we may find peace of spirit and mind. Such contemplation makes it possible to view death in a different light, to find deeper sense in it, and prepare for its coming. The transition to another dimension, that of eternal life, is a stage that comes as natural to every Christian. This is why my own musical statement about the dead is contemplative in mood, full of hope, optimism, and love…”

The Cremonese composer Marc’Antonio Ingegneri (c. 1535/36–92) is chiefly remembered as the teacher of Claudio Monteverdi while, for well-nigh 500 years, his own achievements were left to sit in the shadows. This fourth in a series of pioneering recordings from the Choir of Girton College, Cambridge, presents a sequence of music for Holy Week and Easter, confirming Ingegneri to have been one of the masters of his age. The striking range of moods heard here will confound conventional expectations of Renaissance polyphony: Ingegneri’s emotional palette extends from tender intimacy in some of these motets to dancing, celebratory jubilation in the Mass setting – all of it music of breathtaking richness and beauty.

“ Vulnerasti cor meum ” literally translates as “You have wounded my heart” – which is not only the most classic of amorous metaphors, but also one of the most celebrated to be featured in the Song of Songs . In this, perhaps the greatest love poem in the history of literature, the two central characters of the story exchange promises of love that are pervaded by sensual metaphors and passionate similes verging on the erotic, in a style that lies on the border between the sacred and the secular.

The Stralsund skyline with its brick church towers rises impressively above Strela Sound. While today this view can mainly be seen by those who approach Stralsund via the Rügen Bridge, the city has appeared in this way to arriving seafarers since the Middle Ages. As one of the Hanseatic cities lined up like pearls on southern Baltic Sea beaches, Stralsund had achieved a degree of economic prosperity as a member of the Hanseatic League since the 13th century. Closely networked with other Hanseatic cities such as Lübeck, Wismar and Rostock and governed by councillors and mayors from the upper class of merchants, the Hanseatic League not only guaranteed economic security but also facilitated cultural exchange.

The Choir of Westminster Cathedral is world famous for its staple of plainsong and polyphony. The choir explores a wealth of music from this repertoire for the richest of liturgical seasons: Holy Week. Masterpieces of the Renaissance by William Byrd and Tomás Luis de Victoria are woven together with ancient Gregorian chants, including Pange lingua and Adoro te, and later penitential works by Anton Bruckner and Maurice Duruflé. Three of the Cathedral’s illustrious Masters of Music, all of whom have contributed to the Church’s treasury of liturgical music, are also represented. The sequence culminates in a setting of Saint John Henry Newman’s poem Praise to the Holiest in the height by Sir Richard Runciman Terry, the Cathedral’s pioneering Master of Music.
