Mott the Hoople were one of the great also-rans in the history of rock & roll. Though Mott scored a number of album rock hits in the early '70s, the band never quite broke through into the mainstream. Nevertheless, their nasty fusion of heavy metal, glam rock, and Bob Dylan's sneering hipster cynicism provided the groundwork for many British punk bands, most notably the Clash. At the center of Mott the Hoople was lead vocalist/pianist Ian Hunter, a late addition to the band who developed into its focal point as his songwriting grew.

As the “Swinging Sixties” limped wearily into its final twelve months, an ambitious (but still flat broke) South Midlands rock group called Silence was preparing for one last tilt at breaking into the London gig scene. The group at this time consisted of organist Terence Verden Allen, drummer Terence Dale Griffin (Buffin), guitarist Michael Geoffrey Ralphs, bassist Peter Overend Watts and vocalist Stan Tippins. Early in May 1969 Watts spied a likely ad in Melody Maker — “Tough Aggressive bass player required for Island Records group.”

A product of New York City's early '70s glam rock scene, Twisted Sister were eager students of the New York Dolls, with Kiss's theatrics, Slade's pop acumen, and the shock rock of Alice Cooper tossed in for good measure. Based out of Long Island and featuring the core lineup of guitarists Jay Jay French and Eddie "Fingers" Ojeda, vocalist Dee Snider, bassist Mark "The Animal" Mendoza, and drummer A.J. Pero, the group issued two critically acclaimed, under-the-radar efforts before breaking into the mainstream in 1984 with Stay Hungry.

For the first time since a clutch of incomplete demos and outtakes were unearthed from Marc Bolan's mid-'60s vault in 1972, and sent into the world as the (hastily withdrawn) Hard on Love album, the compilers haven't simply recycled the 20 solo and T. Rex cuts that made up the original track listing, they have also scoured both private and record company collections for a full picture of every track Bolan recorded during 1966-1967 and, for the first time, brought his early years into the same vivid focus as his later career. The 20 songs that comprised the original Hard on Love/Beginning of Doves album, plus the "Perfumed Garden" bonus track appended to Retroactive's 1998 remastering, are now joined by a further 16 performances, including both alternate takes and previously unreleased songs.

A fascinating collection, Best of the Early Years essentially takes the first two 10cc albums in their entirety, replaces four Sheet Music cuts with as many period B-sides, and then jumbles everything up into a running order that works almost as well as the original LPs. It is unlikely whether any true fan would ever consider the instrumental "Hot Sun Rock," or the workaday "4% of Something" and "Bee in My Bonnet" as fitting replacements for the likes of "Hotel," "Baron Samedi," "The Sacro-Iliac" or "Oh! Effendi" (the absent songs). But the presence of "Waterfall" reminds us that not all of the band's best ideas made it onto LP and, while it's difficult to understand why anybody would prefer a collection like this to, say, the Complete UK Recordings package, which takes a fully comprehensive look at the same period, still the budget price is difficult to argue with.

Alexander James Harvey was a Scottish rock and blues musician. Although his career spanned almost three decades, he is best remembered as the frontman of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, with whom he built a reputation as an exciting live performer during the era of glam rock in the 1970s. Their first two albums, Framed (1972) and Next (1973), didn't sell, but in the fall of 1974 The Impossible Dream became Harvey's first chart record in the U.K. (It briefly made the American charts in March 1975.) Tomorrow Belongs to Me followed in the spring of 1975, hitting the Top Ten along with the Top Ten singles placing of Harvey's flamboyant cover of the Tom Jones hit "Delilah."

Combining the Sensational Alex Harvey Band's third and fourth albums, The Impossible Dream and Tomorrow Belongs To Me, offers perhaps the archetypal vision of Alex Harvey, as his long-nurtured alter-ego, the comic book hero Vambo, finally burst out of imagination to take on a life of his own on stages across the world. Yet what would become the group's most successful albums also stand as their patchiest.

One of the 70’s “unsung heroes”, Liverpool Express were formed by ex- members of Sixties hitmakers The Merseybeats and The Merseys. This is the first time their three studio albums have been issued on CD. Included are the hit singles ‘You Are My Love’ (No.11), ‘Hold Tight’ (No.46), ‘Every Man Must Have A Dream’ (No.17) and ‘Dreamin’’ (No. 40). ‘You Are My Love’ also hit No.39 in Germany. Housed in a clam shell box, each album comes in a cardboard wallet depicting the original LP artwork. The detailed 20 page booklet includes liner notes from “History Of Rock” editor Michael Heatley alongside pictures of all the relevant singles including many rare European issues.

For the T. Rex fanatic – and, chances are, if you own more than two albums by Marc Bolan, you are – Acoustic Warrior is a fascinating collection, boasting 15 previously unreleased acoustic takes on such classic songs as "20th Century Boy," "Get It On," "Telegram Sam," "Metal Guru," "Jeepster," "Ballrooms of Mars," "Slider" and "Cosmic Dancer." There are no real revelations and the sound quality is a bit uneven, but there's a ragged charm to these recordings that makes it worth seeking out for hardcore fans.

Originally released back in the very first flash of T.Rexstacy, in an age (hard to imagine now) when the shelves did not overflow with Bolanic compilations, the irresistibly budget-priced Fly Back: Best of Marc Bolan & T. Rex was many newfound fans' first exposure to the music Marc Bolan was making before he hit fame – and what a shock it was. Drawing from all four Tyrannosaurus Rex albums released between 1968-1969, plus a couple of unissued outtakes and single-only sides, Fly Back remains one of the most inspired, and illustrative, of all the collections out there.
