This two-CD package brings together several orchestral works and two choral pieces by nineteenth century Germanic composer Josef Rheinberger (1839-1901). Born in Liechtenstein but resident most of his life in Germany, Rheinberger wrote only two symphonies, and is known today more for his chamber music and religious works. The first CD comprises Wallenstein, described by the composer as a symphonic tone painting in four movements.

In the musically glamorous Rome of the early 18th century, the young Handel was able to develop wonderfully as an artist. One of the exceptional Roman singers of the time was the tenor Vittorio Chiccheri, whom Handel used in the leading roles of his Roman oratorios. The Roman tenor Luca Cervoni traces the singer's career through arias by Handel, A. Scarlatti, Caldara and Chiccheri. With his soft and supple timbre and the great flexibility and agility of his voice, he brings Handel's famous tenor back to life.

Pedro de Escobar (c. 1465-c.1535) was a composer of the same renaissance generation as Josquin, Isaac, Mouton and De La Rue. He was born in Porto, Portugal but was of Castilian ancestry; his work was in great demand in his time and he spent part of his working life in Spain, much of this in the service of the Catholic Queen Isabella I. His best-known works today are a Requiem Mass (recorded twice so far), a Magnificat setting and a handful of motets, but this present CD brings us the first recording of a complete ordinary Mass setting, simply titled ‘Missa 4v.’

Ich bin vergnügt … (I am content …) is the title of the new album by soprano Miriam Feuersinger. It refers to Johann Sebastian Bach's cantata "Ich bin vergnügt mit meinem Glücke" BWV 84, but it also corresponds entirely to the feelings of the singer, who is fulfilling a long-cherished wish of her heart with this programme: On this release, the proven Bach specialist presents the three most beautiful cantatas written by Johann Sebastian Bach for solo soprano. While the cantata "Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen" BWV 52 is an operatic, virtuosic hymn of praise that places high technical demands on the performer, in the cantata "Ich habe genug" BWV 82 Bach sets the yearning of St. Simeon for salvation in wonderful melodies in the most intimate way. Miriam Feuersinger, sensitively and delicately accompanied by the Capricornus Consort Basel, wonderfully performs Bach's cantatas with her slender, clear voice and lets us feel her "Vergnügen" in every single note.

Philipp Wolfrum (1854-1919) was one of the most influential personalities in German musical life around 1900. He worked as a choirmaster, organist, composer, professor and university music director in Heidelberg and friendships connected him with Engelbert Humperdinck, Max Reger and Richard Strauss; he also maintained close contact with the Bayreuth circle around Richard Wagner's widow Cosima. Liszt and Wagner were his great idols and this is also noticeable in his compositions.

In his "Tricinia" Caspar Othmayr deals with the deadly sins and opposes each transgression with a composition as an "antidote" (antidote). Othmayr was a student at the University of Heidelberg and founded the circle of the so-called "Heidelberger Liedmeister" together with musician friends. From this grouping arose countless artistic songs around sacred and secular themes, which Georg Forster collected in the Frische Teutschen Liedlein. Accompanied by the viola da gamba ensemble Dryades Consort, the countertenor Franz Vitzthum presents all seven deadly sins and - as an antidote - the corresponding virtues in artful movements from this fund.

In Paris at the end of the Baroque era and with the rising bourgeoisie, a new era dawned for composers after the death of king Louis XIV. Joseph Bodin de Boismortier was in the right place at the right time and knew how to meet the burgeoning demand with a nimble pen. He wrote a vast amount of gallant, easily playable chamber music, which he also published himself in an unheard-of way! The Neumeyer Consort presents the two collections of works op. 32 and 37 and combines their trios, quartets and concerto with changing instrumentations to create a colorful painting in the Galant style.

In 1735 Handel gave up opera due to dwindling public demand and turned his attention to the great sacred compositions. However, he took with him essential elements of the opera and transferred them to the oratorio, which he also called Sacred Dramas. The countertenor Franz Vitzthum has selected a number of wonderful Sacred Arias from various of these Sacred Dramas, in which his light, bell-pure alto voice comes into its own. He has compiled these arias into an exciting programme, which is finely set in scene by the Orfeo Baroque Orchestra conducted by Julian Tölle.
