Voice Mail is the second solo album by the English rock musician John Wetton. Initially released on 17 June 1994 in Japan only, it was re-released internationally as Battle Lines with the same musical content but different artwork. John Wetton was an English singer, bassist, and songwriter. He rose to fame with bands Mogul Thrash, Family, King Crimson, Roxy Music and Uriah Heep. Following his period in Uriah Heep, Wetton formed U.K., and later — after a brief stint in Wishbone Ash — he was the frontman and principal songwriter of the supergroup Asia, which proved to be his biggest commercial success.

A reissue of an album originally released in Japan in 1994 under the title Voice Mail, 1995's Battle Lines continues John Wetton's career path over the preceding 15 years – there's more pop than prog in his prog pop, in other words. Basically indistinguishable from a late-period Asia album, the ten tracks on Battle Lines were mostly co-written by Wetton and keyboardist Bob Marlette. The re-release garnered a new cover and bonus track - acoustic version of the title track.

Upon leaving UK, before reaching Asia, journeyman John Wetton released his first solo album, Caught in the Crossfire. Although a vocal doppelgänger of Greg Lake, as a songwriter Wetton was always more of a team player, so there was no occasion in Wetton's past work where you could say, "Aha, this is what he'd sound like on his own." And he is largely on his own here, handling vocals, bass, keyboards, and even guitar while writing all of the material (though Peter Sinfield does chip in on "Get What You Want"). The result is surprisingly good; Wetton is clearly more comfortable writing songs on the bass, but he fleshes them out nicely with keyboards, supported by Bad Company drummer Simon Kirke, embellished with the plaintive guitar leads of Jethro Tull's Martin Barre, and polished with a pair of saxophone solos from Malcolm Duncan.

Anthology is the first John Wetton compilation to draw exclusively from his solo albums. Why hadn't anybody thought of doing this before? Well, common sense for one thing. Not that Wetton's solo albums are bad, but they tend to be maudlin; jam 18 of these babies together on a single disc and you can suck the air out of a pretty big room. Even Wetton himself doesn't lean so heavily on his own handiwork, interspersing his live shows with material from Asia, King Crimson, and UK. For the irredeemable optimist, Anthology poses less of a problem; the sound quality is very good and there are some strategically placed reprieves from sadness along the way ("Jane," "Round in Circles," "I'll Be There").

Following the warm response that graced their return CD, Icon, in May 2005 and the Icon EP in August 2005, John Wetton and Geoff Downes are now offering an acoustic DVD filmed for a broadcast special at TV studios during October 2005. Stripping bare a selection of their classic songs, John and Geoff demonstrate how they originally sounded around the piano, accompanied by acoustic guitar or acoustic bass. ELO’s Hugh McDowell joins them on cello and the three virtuosos clearly enjoy the opportunity to relax while performing in front of the cameras. At the time of recording this broadcast, they were keeping quiet about the plans for a 25th anniversary reunion of the founder members of Asia, including Steve Howe and Carl Palmer, which were publicised in February 2006. 2005 and 2006 has seen the original "Heat of the Moment" grace the soundtracks of 2 Hollywood blockbusters, the number 1 film of Summer 2005 [40 year old virgin], and Pierce Brosnan’s Golden Globe nominee "The Matador" which has graced the top 10 both sides of the Atlantic.

John Wetton's early-2003 album Rock of Faith appeared after a two-year string of concert releases. It was written at a crossroads in the singer/bassist's life, in the wake of his 50th birthday – it was also occasioned by his extended visit to Vienna, which stimulated him artistically, and recorded in the wake of the dire world events of 2001 halfway around the globe. The ex-Family/King Crimson/Asia member rises to the occasion here, with an album evocative of his progressive rock past, yet slightly leaner and more focused than most of those efforts ever were, and supported by Geoffrey Downes (keyboards), Clive Nolan (keyboards), John Mitchell (electric guitars), and Steve Christey (drums).

Voice Mail continues John Wetton's career path over the preceding 15 years - there's more pop than prog in his prog pop, in other words. Basically indistinguishable from a late-period Asia album, the ten tracks on Voice Mail were mostly co-written by Wetton and keyboardist Bob Marlette; the combination of their less-than-memorable melodies and undistinguished lyrics with Ron Nevison's smooth-as-glass production makes Voice Mail an almost entirely forgettable album with little to recommend it for anyone but the most devoted members of Wetton's cult following. Only the opening "Right Where I Wanted to Be" and the spirited "Space and Time" feature particularly strong choruses, but both sound more like Chris de Burgh or Toto than the formerly much more interesting John Wetton.

Although John Wetton is at the helm throughout all of these tracks, King's Road, 1972-1980 is really a collaboration of progressive rock artists that have joined Wetton across each of the 13 songs. Wetton's renditions of songs by his former bands King Crimson and UK come off quite clean and refined, especially "As Long As You Want Me Here" from 1979's Night After Night Live album and the opening "Nothing to Lose" off Danger Money. While his efforts at singing the King Crimson tracks lack the magic and fullness they exhibit in their original form, they still maintain a slight electrified feel. The entire 12 minutes of "Starless" from the classic Red album makes for an excellent finishing track, brought marvelously back to life with the steady drumming of Bill Bruford and the sparkling keyboard work of Robert Fripp…
