Psychedelic Rock / Progressive Rock

Seattle-based art rock band Obscured by Clouds took their name from Pink Floyd's 1972 album of the same name, and their sound also reflects the spacy, electronic-induced psychedelia of that era – but with modern sound reinforcements and technological digital enhancements. William Weikart is the brain trust and founder of the ensemble, initially inspired when he saw Pink Floyd's Live at Pompeii, and took cues from the dreamy vocals of David Gilmour and sparse musings of guitarist Gilmour and bassist Roger Waters. He has also been influenced by progressive artists like the Doors, Tangerine Dream, King Crimson, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, Robin Trower, Morphine, and Soundgarden.

The legendary Django Reinhardt appears on an Avid release for the second time, here featuring his electric period. Focusing on his music after 1947 when he returned from the USA having played with Duke Ellington, we also include a valuable recording made at the RDF radio studios possibly for a film soundtrack and skillfully re-mastered by Avid's own sound engineers. Django's music in the 1950's underwent many changes as witnessed among these tracks. We travel through small group swing to bebop influenced modern harmonic and rhythmically conceptual pieces, urgent, wild and frantic as detected in his amazing guitar playing!

If you’re only interested in a single disc of Joonas Kokkonen’s music, then let this be the one. It contains three out-and-out masterpieces, stunningly played and recorded with even more vividness and immediacy than on the already superb BIS complete orchestral music edition. Kokkonen’s austere but deeply felt idiom, with its atmospheric tone colors and fleeting lyricism, follows logically on the Sibelius of the Fourth Symphony. This is particularly true of Kokkonen’s Third and Fourth Symphonies, which have much the same feeling of organic growth from just a few simple motives that so often characterizes Sibelius’ work.

Psychedelic Rock, Pop Rock | Second Harvest #411

On some obscure releases of the early '70s, Majority One wrote and recorded material in the manner of some of the more foppish late-'60s British psychedelic pop, though the style had been out of fashion for a couple of years or so. The group evolved out of the U.K. band the Majority, who issued eight singles on Decca between 1965 and 1968 without reaching the British charts. After a lot of personnel turnover and a spell backing British singer Barry Ryan, the group moved to France and issued one final single as the Majority, "Charlotte Rose," though this was only released in some European territories. In 1970, still based in France, they changed their name to Majority One, issuing a few singles in 1970 and 1971 and a self-titled album in 1971, though the latter only came out in France and Holland at the time.

“A history of the Requiem” takes the music-lover on a journey through the very varied history of the requiem. Presenting one work per century seemed to be just right for illustrating the evolution of this, one of the most significant musical forms in the history of music. The first part of the series, devoted to Ockeghem and Lassus, was awarded a ‘5’ by the prestigious magazine Goldberg, and here now is the second part, presenting the requiems of André Campra and Michael Haydn, recorded on period instruments. A worthy successor to Lully and an admitted model for Rameau, Campra gives us with his Requiem, an ideal gateway for entering into a musical world of unquestioned emotional depth. Michael Haydn, the brother of Joseph, is one of the most remarkable composers of sacred music from the classical period.

This disc follows on the enthusiastic press and success of Tzimon Barto's début on Ondine - featuring keyboard pieces by Rameau.

Directly across the Bay from San Francisco, in Alameda County, lies a thirty mile band of suburbia encompassing small cities like San Leandro, Hayward, Union City and Castro Valley, topped and tailed by Oakland and Fremont and linked by the winding thoroughfare of East 14th Street. A century ago, this was where a fledgling movie industry briefly considered making a home, before it discovered Hollywood to the south. And forty years ago, the East Bay brimmed with another 20th Century popular cultural phenomenon: the garage band. The ‘adult’ rock shenanigans of San Francisco’s hippie clique would have little impact in the clubs and dancehalls of this particular locale. Local teens demanded tough, danceable rock and soul: entertainment, not enlightenment.

A Switzerland-based hard rock act formed in 1997, Shakra went through a number of lineup changes (including a vocalist change when the bands' momentum was just gaining attention) but managed to persevere and keep going for over two decades. Their first album, 1998's Shakra, and its follow-up, 1999's Moving Force, were strong enough to earn them support slots touring with bands like Great White and Uriah Heep. Real progress was being made with their third album, Power Ride (2001), but unfortunately a health situation forced the departure of vocalist Pete Wiedmer. Mark Fox stepped in to fill the frontman role, and the band recorded and released Rising in 2003. The band was a hit on German and Swiss charts, and toured extensively in support of their work. After many live shows and tours with Hammerfall and Stratovarius, Shakra released Infected in 2007.

This Bartered Bride ’s acting and singing is generally of a high level. Lucia Popp was caught at a perfect time for this role. She’d gradually been developing her voice into a larger, more dramatic instrument, and here displays a lyric’s warmth with the power of a spinto. She clearly enjoys the challenge of the only serious aria in the entire work (in act III; performed in German as “Wie fremd und tot”), providing many fine interpretative points and a great deal of tonal variety. The audience goes wild, as well they might.

For twenty-first century ears accustomed to every type of music imaginable, it can be hard to hear Gesualdo's later madrigals as the shocking and revolutionary pieces they are or imagine the reaction of their original audiences, but sometimes the music is so supremely odd that it inevitably elicits a double-take. This is sometimes the result of Gesualdo's brilliant/cavalier disregard for the late Renaissance conventions of harmony, tonality, and voice leading, but just as often it's the intensity of emotional affect in his response to the texts, which can create music that seems alarmingly disjunct, even schizophrenic, in its mood swings. In any case, Gesualdo is a composer who's most appealing to listeners who like wild rides and lots of aural surprises.

Swod is the recording project of Oliver Doerell and Stephan Wohrmann, two accomplished musicians who met in Berlin sometime in 1991. Oliver plays guitar, bass and all manner of electronics - he is also a long-time family member of City Centre Offices having recorded an album and an EP under the “Dictaphone” moniker in between composing and performing musical pieces for theatre, installations and film over the last few years. Stephan plays piano and drums, arranging an almost neo-classical structure within a recording that already sounds ghostly and cinematic. Translated as "go", "Gehen" (2004) represents a labour of love from two musicians experienced in the art of seductive and evocative music making…

20 Gems From The Early Years Of Prog. A Visit to the Spaceship Factory presents 20 ear-watering morsels that will thrill and entertain in equal measure. Wander the dimly lit corners of the Spaceship Factory, an establishment designed to produce vehicles that could take you from the geometric wallpaper of your room to the far side of your electric dreams. It wasn't in production for very long, but while it was operating, not only did it manufacture million-selling models such as Yes, Black Sabbath and Jethro Tull, but it brought you the brash rock of Treetops, the polished guitar wizardry of Israeli progsters Jericho, the fuzzed-up dirt of Jesse Hector's proto-punk outfit Helter Skelter, and countless other designs now being re-appraised or still waiting to be recognized. The conveyor belts may be still, the furnaces may be cold, but the ships still fly to the stars. Psychic Circle's intrepid vinyl hound, Jamie Romer, has scoured the land in his quest to excavate more undiscovered psycho-prog stunners. This new selection bears testament to his endeavors. Other artists include: Mousetrap, Deadwood, Fuzzyduck, Incredible Hog, Mouse, Beggars Opera, Kingdom Come, Little Bighorn, Strange Fox, Onyx, Spontaneous Combustion, UFO, Sheephouse, Pussy, Axe, Sunchariot and Kansashook.

Play It 'Til Tomorrow is Nick Moss' most ambitious recording project yet: two jam-packed discs spotlighting the entire width and breadth of his band's sonic attack. Longtime fans will immediately recognize the stinging electric blues sound that characterizes the first CD, but on disc two Nick introduces an 'unplugged' side that he's never before tapped in the studio. The uncommon versatility of the Flip Tops-ex-Legendary Blues Band keyboardist Willie Oshawny (who switches over to bass for four cuts and second guitar on another), harpist and fretsman extraordinaire Gerry Hundt, and veteran drummer Bob Carter - plays a huge role in the collection's extraordinary variety. Inherently grasping the value of playing as a rock-solid unit, the Flip Tops cook up steady-surging grooves while Nick's slashing guitar solos make every note count and every phrase resonate with authority. Adding to the mix are special guests Eddie Taylor Jr. and Barrelhouse Chuck.
