Erich J. Wolff’s name will be unfamiliar to many but in the 1920s an authoritative reference book on popular art song ranked his compositions fourth, behind Hugo Wolf, Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler. The first volume in this series of Wolff’s Complete Songs introduces a composer of astonishing gifts whose Romanticism is as daring as his formal sophistication. Wolff’s songs are lyrical, serene and full of melodic beauty, coupled with piano writing that is both virtuosic and atmospheric.

A once abandoned Passion project by J. S. Bach? Harpsichordist and conductor Alexander Grychtolik, together with the Il Gardellino Orchestra, embarks on a captivating artistic experiment with this presentation of the Passion Oratorio BWV Anh. 169. The starting point for the partial reconstruction attempt and the completion of the work is the surviving libretto by the poet Picander from 1725. This unique endeavor draws the audience into a profound exploration of human empathy with the poignant suffering of Jesus and sheds light on a passion aesthetic we had not seen previously in Bach’s repertoire.

The harpsichordist and conductor Alexander Grychtolik and the top Belgian ensemble Il Gardellino present here on PASSACAILLE an attempt to reconstruct the Passion oratorio BWV Anh. 169, which Bach began around 1725 but then
abandoned or had to abandon. This recording is intended to show that with Picander's free Passion poem, the composer must also have planned his own contribution to the then extremely popular genre of the freely composed Passion oratorio. Numerous detailed questions about the work will probably remain unanswered forever. In the spirit of artistic experimentation, however, this version is intended to explore a new aspect of Bach's Passion aesthetics.

Samuel Scheidt, who was born in Halle an der Saale in 1587 and died there in 1654, is one of the most well-known composers of the early Baroque (he is always mentioned as one of the "three great Sch" along with Schütz and Schein). With his numerous surviving works, however, he is not very present in contemporary concert life. As a cycle, his "Lieblichen Krafft-Blümlein" are a world premiere recording. Most of the individual pieces have also never been recorded before. The collection consists of a total of twelve continuo-accompanied duets on texts largely composed from biblical words.

360° Hugo Wolf. The title says it all. Daniel Johannsen and Andreas Fröschl present an exquisite selection of art songs from Wolf’s extensive oeuvre. Combined with the sound of the contemporary grand piano by Carl Rönisch (1872), these songs are distilled into a unique, fascinating essence of the art of Lied of the late Romantic period.
