Orchestre National De Lyon L'Orchestre National de Lyon, or the National Orchestra of Lyon, is one of France's major regional orchestras. The ensemble grew out of a long tradition of orchestral music-making in its long-time culturally independent city. Ultimately, the history of L'Orchestre National de Lyon dates back to a municipal academy of the arts in the 18th century, but its immediate predecessor was the Societé Symphoniques des Grands Concerts, which was founded in 1903 and gave its first concert in 1905. It was later renamed the Societé des Concerts Philharmoniques. Although only semi-professional, this group attracted guest conductors from beyond southeastern France, including Pierre Monteux and Ernest Ansermet. In 1969, after gaining support from the city of Lyon, the group was renamed L'Orchestre Philharmonique Rhône-Alpes and then Société Philharmonique de Lyon. Early conductors were Louis Frémaux (1969-1971) and Serge Baudo (1971-1986); the latter moved the orchestra into the 2,0900-seat Maurice Ravel Auditorium, which remains the group's home today.

Founded in 1901 by a group of Polish business leaders and musicians, the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra has survived through the tumultuous changes that have beset its city and its homeland, emerging changed but with its essential values intact. The soloist in the first concert was Paderewski, Poland's future prime minister, and the orchestra was installed in a splendid hall influenced by the design of the Paris Opéra. Until 1939 that hall was one of Poland's cultural centers, and the orchestra, under first conductor Emil Mlynarski and his successors, played host to soloists like Pablo Casals and Jascha Heifetz. The orchestra performed at the first Chopin International Piano Competition, in 1927, and has continued to be closely associated with that event.

Fernando Lopes-Graça, one of Portugal’s most prolific and innovative 20th-century composers, was steeped in the folk songs of various provenances. In this third instalment (the earlier volumes are on 8.579039 and 8.579082) Lopes-Graça sets some of the greatest of all Portuguese poets. His exploration of harmonic complexity and progressive writing is distantly rooted in Debussy and laced with other subtle French elements. Premiere recordings of the kaleidoscopic Old English and French songs, which run the gamut of emotions, are among his earliest settings of foreign folk songs.

Florence Price and Leo Sowerby were both prominent members of the Chicago music community in the 1930s and 1940s, and they are known to have respected each other’s work. Most of Florence Price’s compositions remained unpublished at her death, and her String Quartet in A minor was not performed in her lifetime. Its African American vernacular idioms and colorful harmonic language are characteristics shared in the famous melodies woven into the later Five Folksongs in Counterpoint. From its brooding opening through propulsive rhythms, expressive lyrical melodies and fugal finale, this premiere recording of Sowerby’s String Quartet in G minor reveals a work undeserving of its decades of obscurity. This recording is very much part of an encouraging rediscovery of Florence Price, the first African American female to have a symphonic work performed in Chicago back in 1933, coupled with Leo Sowerby’s unpublished String Quartet in G minor. This is the kind of release that adds significantly to our knowledge of American classical music in the 1930s, topped off with the attraction of Price’s better-known Five Folksongs in Counterpoint from 1951.

Specific literary quotations from Shakespeare, Blaise Pascal and Samuel Johnson elucidate the expressive moods of the three-movement Cello Concerto No. 1.

Although there has always been some uproar about transcribing Bach's music, especially his keyboard music to piano, I see the Bach transcriptions as an eloquent homage to the old master. Arrangements and transcriptions have been made for over two hundred years and for the reason that Bach's music will always be effective on other mediums. Busoni and Godowsky were perhaps the greatest transcribers, with Liszt following closely behind. The piano is such a versatile instrument and can please both the Baroque enthusiasts and the Romantic lovers. Only the piano can imitate the fleeting polyphony and yet transform the music with sonorous beauty.

Konstantin Scherbakov is among the most ubiquitous and often-recorded pianists before the public today. The range of his repertory is vast and demanding, both technically and interpretively: he has recorded the complete solo piano outputs of Godowsky, Shostakovich, and Respighi; the complete piano/orchestral works of Medtner, Respighi, and Scriabin; and he is involved in other large projects including the complete Liszt piano transcriptions of the Beethoven symphonies. His repertory also includes such disparate composers as Domenico Scarlatti, Liapunov, and Franck. Scherbakov has made numerous recordings since 1992, mostly for the Naxos label.
