What does ancestry sound like? I’ve long been fascinated by the idea that underlying patterns influence our lives and that they manifest enigmatically and mysteriously across and within generations. I don’t necessarily believe in fate, but uncanny syncretisms–the stubborn coincidences whose songs lurk in the edges of the mind’s ear–bloom across my ancestral record, as they might yours as well.

Smith’s new album, Laugh Ash, is perhaps his most startling and remarkable to date, a breathtakingly original set of music whose touchstones are myriad but ultimately meaningless in the face of an inventive and stunningly unfamiliar expression. Due out February 2, 2024 via Pyroclastic Records, the album makes thrilling use of disorientation and juxtaposition: starkly beautiful chamber melodies coexist with synthetic rhythms, explosive bursts of improvisation with elusive song forms, austere ambience with thundering complexity. Eclectic, undoubtedly, but in a paradoxical way that is defiantly cohesive while never losing sight of the fact that none of it should be.

The second, eponymous album from saxophonist-composer Tim Berne’s acoustic quartet Snakeoil. Over four years together, Berne and his band of New York standouts - pianist Matt Mitchell, clarinetist Oscar Noriega and drummer/percussionist Ches Smith - have developed a rapport that sounds like communal telepathy. The studio outcome is a marvel of kinetic action, the six pieces of Shadow Man making for music as visceral as it is cerebral; there is roller coaster dynamism and aching lyricism, roiling counterpoint and intriguing harmony, glinting detail and ensemble impact. The album is a dizzying experience for the senses, breathtaking in its sheer imaginative verve.

UNCHARTED TERRITORIES reunites Dave Holland with saxophonist Evan Parker, a longtime friend from their early days in London. They are joined by Craig Taborn, on piano and electronics, and Ches Smith on percussion. In addition to quartet improvisations, they also broke off into every possible subset of duo and trio configurations. The group also recorded two compositions by Smith and one by Holland.The resulting 23 tracks present a series of deep, multi-layered conversations between the musicians, some of whom were interacting for the first time.

The Bell features dynamic chamber music compositions written for masterful improvisers.
