"Jazz at Massey Hall" is an exhilarating live recording from one of, if not the finest quintets ever assembled. This legendary recording features performances by five of jazz’s leading players, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Bud Powell, Charles Mingus and Max Roach. The performance was listed on Guardian’s “50 Greatest Moments in Jazz”. Inducted into the GRAMMY Hall of Fame, the jam session is widely considered the greatest jazz concert ever.

With Charlie Parker under contract, producer Norman Granz recorded him in a variety of contexts, among them putting Bird's sax in front of a Latin rhythm section. A couple of sessions, from which eight tunes ended up on the 10" LP South of the Border (Mercury MGC-513), featured Bird with small groups including veteran jazz players with the addition of José Mangual on bongos and Luis Miranda on congas. All of the master takes from those dates, along with Bird's studio recordings with Machito's big band, have been included on this CD, which also contains several alternate takes from the sessions.

One of several volumes in the Genius Of Charlie Parker series issued by Verve, this installment was released in 1957, two years following Parker's death. With arrangements by Joe Lipman and production supervised by Norman Granz, the collection includes one of Parker's signature tunes, "Night And Day".

This reissue combines a pair of Charlie Parker's most popular recordings, two volumes titled Charlie Parker with Strings, recorded in 1949 and 1950. Unlike most of Parker's other albums, for these sessions he eschewed original tunes and stuck to standards by Cole Porter, the Gershwins, Jimmy McHugh and others, reimagined for a small string ensemble.
