The Trios all date from 1797, when Haydn had ascended from the position of a gifted and appreciated court composer to achieve fame. Concurrent with his increased fame, he began writing extensively for the piano trio, a combination that was the focus of his attention in his last years of activity. The Trios on this disc are the results of Haydn's late life and show all of his accomplishments and inspiration.
It's difficult to pick out which portions of this disc stand out most because there are so many of them that are terrific. The central Allegretto from the 28th Trio or the infectious middle section of the finale of the 30th are personal favorites, but other listeners will point to others moments. The individuality of Haydn's effort here is also shown by the unusual key selected for the 31st trio, E-flat minor, certainly one of the very few 18th-century compositions which use it.
