The second part of the 18th century saw increasing popularity for the trio for keyboard and two melody instruments. Joseph Haydn contributed considerably to the development of this genre with his trios for keyboard, violin and cello. Whereas in his early trios the violin has a relatively important part to play – Haydn usually played that part himself - gradually the keyboard became the dominating instrument, reducing the violin and cello to merely accompanying roles.

George Enescu shares with Liszt, Rachmaninoff and Busoni the misfortune of having been a very great virtuoso, both violinist and pianist, who has had to wait a long time before full justice is done to him as a composer. For their first disc, the three young members of the all-female Trio Brancusi present three piano trios by Enesco, including premiere recordings of the Trio in G minor and the Sérénade Lointaine.

Both these couplings are extremely fine, but taken together they add up to even more than the sum of their parts. The point of coupling Shostakovich’s first and last string quartets is obvious, and the contrast between what the composer himself called his “Springtime Quartet” and the unprecedented sequence of six slow movements written months before his death could not be more poignant.

Ferlendis composed four oboe concertos which, up until now, existed only in nineteenth-century copies of the scores, with only one being recorded. This is the first time these have been recorded on CD. Although the concertos contain some clear elements of Mozartian coinage, their melodic wealth of ideas and natural elegance point to the composer’s Italian temperament. Six trios, here in the instrumentation for oboe, flute, and bassoon, round off the recording.

The Florestan Trio now turns its attention to Schumann's Piano Trios. These two works, Opp 63 and 80, were composed in rapid succession in the summer and autumn of 1847, some five years after the prolific year when Schumann composed most of his large-scale chamber works.

The music of Mieczys?aw Weinberg continues to be issued, and continues to impress. Like his British counterpart, York Bowen, Weinberg was a composer trapped in time and place, and it is good that their very different musics are now coming to the fore with such regularity. One of the wonderful things about this disc, aside from the committed, intense playing of the instrumentalists, is the sound: crisp and clear, with only a very little reverb, which brings the sound of the instruments into sharp focus and makes the listener pay attention to the music.

Johann Nepomuk Hummel was a pupil of Mozart. A child prodigy himself, he developed a highly virtuoso technique on the piano, and built an impressive career as one of the most famous and sought after pianists and composers of early 19th century Europe. Even today some of his piano works offer a serious challenge to professional pianists. Hummels piano trios are composed in the classical Viennese style, but offer already hints of romantic drama and passion. The instrumental writing is of the highest order for all three instruments. The piano trios are delightful works full of brilliant virtuosity, charm and wit.

Although there were once some 200 Chaminade Clubs in the U.S. alone, the music of Cécile Chaminade, France's foremost female composer of the late Romantic era, has not been well served on recordings. Her piano music is beginning to reappear, but the works for piano trio and the duo pieces on this disc from Germany's MDG label are very rare finds. Chaminade's larger works, such as the two piano trios heard here, tend to follow Germanic rather than French models.

Ray Still, principal oboist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for forty years, was praised by the Chicago Tribune for his “distinctively rich, mellow, singing tone”. He joins Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman and Lynn Harrell in this programme of oboe quartets, with Mozart as the centrepiece.

Black Oak Ensemble, the Chicago-based string trio with an international following, treats listeners to a double-album of stylish and often witty French treasures written between the World Wars. The ensemble offers seven rarely heard delicacies from the 1920s and 30s, including world premiere recordings of trios by Henri Tomasi, Robert Casadesus, and Gustave Samazeuilh along with works by Jean Cras, Emile Goué, Jean Françaix, and Gabriel Pierné. Most were written for and dedicated to the virtuosic Trio Pasquier, which ranked among the era's chamber music superstars.

Start with the sound: Berlin Classics here offers chamber music recorded in a chamber like the ones for which it was intended. Israeli clarinetist Sharon Kam, along with German pianist Martin Helmchen (there's something that wouldn't have been so common until recently) and cellist Gustav Rivinius, performs Brahms' three late chamber masterpieces for clarinet in the Siemens-Villa in Berlin, not the studio it sounds like but a genuine villa in Berlin's swank Lichterfelde neighborhood.

Ideally, a piano trio should be balanced in its voices and the parts more or less equally matched in expression, but it sometimes happens in late Romantic chamber music that an overwrought piano part can create the opposite conditions. In the Trio élégiaque No. 1 in G minor by Sergey Rachmaninov and the Piano Trio in A minor by Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky, the piano is clearly the dominant force, because it carries most of the thematic material, harmonic textures, and dramatic gestures, and thereby reduces the violin and cello to subsidiary roles.

This is definitely a Beethoven footnote, but an interesting one: two arrangements by the composer, one substituting a violin for the clarinet in his Clarinet Trio, the other reducing the Second Symphony to a Piano Trio. The violin version of the Clarinet Trio just seems like a compromise, and the piece misses the color of the clarinet. Paradoxically, trimming down the scoring of the Second Symphony results in a worthwhile alternate, in which listeners who know the Symphony well may be fascinated by the way the great composer attempts to reproduce his orchestral effects with smaller forces.

Trio Parnassus adopts flowing tempos for the “Archduke” trio, which fits into the ensemble’s overall “classical” conception of the work, quite removed from the Beaux Arts Trio’s slower and lovingly elevated performance that holds your attention by its sheer beauty of execution. There’s beauty aplenty in Parnassus’ playing as well, particularly in the serene Andante cantabile, where each variation unfolds in warmly glowing tone colors.
