The Chilean pianist Arrau, born on February 06, 1903 in Chillán, attracted attention at the age of five with a recital in Santiago – a concert that co-founded his reputation as a child prodigy. After studying with Paoli for two years, the Chilean government sent him with financial support to the Stern Conservatory in Berlin, where he had already performed once as an eleven-year-old. His only teacher here was Martin Krause, the last Liszt student still alive at that time and of decisive importance for Arrau's musical style.
During his 5-year studies, Claudio Arrau has already received several awards, such as the Ibach Prize and the Gustav Holländer Medal. His first tours took him through Germany and Scandinavia and in 1918 again through the whole of Europe. in 1919 and 1920, he twice won the Liszt Prize, which had not been awarded before forty-five years. The seventeen-year-old has already performed with internationally renowned orchestras and conductors such as Wilhelm Furtwängler and Arthur Nikisch. in 1921 he gave extremely successful concerts in Argentina and Chile as part of a trip to South America. in 1923 he undertook a tour of America
From 1924 Claudio Arrau himself became a professor at the Stern Conservatory, to which he belonged until 1940. He achieved a milestone in his career in 1927 in Geneva with the first prize at the Grand Prix International des Pianistes, whose jury included such important artistic personalities as Arthur Rubinstein and Alfred Cortot.
A core of his artistic work are a series of recitals in which he deals with the pianistic oeuvre of great composers. In 1935, for example, he performed Johann Sebastian Bach's piano work on twelve evenings in Berlin. After that, however, he turned away from Bach, as he considers the result on the modern concert grand to be insufficient. A year later, the piano work of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was the focus of his interest, before he paid tribute in 1937 to the piano work of Franz Schubert for a complete interpretation.
in 1940, Claudio Arrau left Europe to found an institute for piano playing in Santiago. But a year later he moved to New York with his wife, the singer Ruth Schneider, and their two children. One of the highlights of his intensive concert activity, with over one hundred performances a year, was a series of complete performances of Beethoven's piano sonatas in London and New York, even broadcast by the BBC in 1952. The main focus of his worldwide tours are compositions of romanticism.
in 1967 he established the Claudio Arrau Foundation to support young musicians. From 1973 he reissued the Beethoven Piano Sonatas with the music publisher Peters. The Berliner Philharmoniker honored the anniversary of the fifty-year collaboration with the Hans von Bülow Medal in 1978. Arrau died at the age of eighty-eight on 09 June 1991 in Mürzzuschlag in Austria.
In addition to the Refrenz recordings of the Brahms Piano Concertos with Carlo Maria Giulini, EMI Classics has released a recording of the etudes op. 10 and op. 25 by Frédèric Chopin in the series Références. But Claudio Arrau is also represented in the DVD-video series Classic Archive - dedicated to the legends of classical music in rare image documents (including the BBC).
