Bohm conducts Bruckner's 1889 revised score which represents the composer's final thoughts on his Third Symphony. As Bruckner matured - artistically speaking - his thoughts turned towards a more Beethovenian "Classical" view of symphonic music, in the Brahms mould, and the references to Wagner's - the Third's dedicatee - music were excised, all but one, from the score of the Third Symphony. This purity of symphonic form allowed Bruckner to present his musical thoughts in such a way that the music's inner logic conveyed a more well-structured architecture, allowing Bruckner's - and not Wagner's - voice to ring-out, loud and clear. By the time Bruckner revised the Third he'd composed his "contrapuntal masterpiece", the Fifth, and Wagner's influence no longer dominated…
This Decca recording is magnificent. Bohm and the Vienna Philharmonic deliver a Third of great spiritual depth and awe-inspiring power. Bohm doesn't force the music, it flows and develops with a naturalness and inevitability from the first note to the last conveying all of the power, poetry and mystery the music demands. Recorded in the Sofiensaal, Vienna, in 1970, the sound quality doesn't disappoint; the VPO strings sound glorious, not to mention the brass, and Bohm displays deft control of dynamic scale. The VPO convey the mighty chorales with devastating power, and with the effortlessness of a truly great Bruckner orchestra. The third movement - Ziemlich schnell - is massively powerful with Bohm finding just the right tempo and the VPO respond magnificently. The Adagio, with the one remaining Wagner quotation - the sleep motif from Die Walkure - is as mysterious and beautiful as I've ever heard in any recording of the Third - and I own many. The Third's final movement - Allegro - is all about contrast and juxtaposition, with a frivolous polka theme representing life's simple pleasures and a noble theme which conveys an ominous feeling of portent and the inevitable - Death…. be afraid, be very afraid. This is a sublime Third, conducted by Karl Bohm with genius, vision and clarity in abundance. They don't make 'em like they used to, and that's a fact.
