Andrea Bacchetti follows his album of sonatas by Baldassarre Galuppi with another little-performed 18th century Venetian, Benedetto Marcello, whose work has a surprisingly modern character.

The "Sonata III", for instance, opens with a sequence in which the right hand plays the same note 48 times in rapid succession, while the left cycles quadruplets around it – the kind of gambit you'd expect from a Cage or Feldman, but hardly from a contemporary of Vivaldi. Marcello is said to have once fallen into a grave that opened beneath him, a trauma perhaps responsible for the austere, near-spiritual logic of pieces such as the "Sonata V", where the absence of frills prefigures the enigmatic miniatures of Erik Satie.

Review by Andy Gill, Independent.co.uk

Sony RCA's chosen title, 'Piano Sonatas', is something of an anachronism, as is Italian pianist Andrea Bacchetti's use of a modern pianoforte. Music-lovers who prefer historical exactitude are probably unlikely to give this new release much of a chance. That would be a pity for two reasons at least: first, because any chance to listen to the inexplicably neglected Benedetto Marcello's music should always be jumped at. Secondly, because Bacchetti gives a typically stylish, thoughtful and expressive account of these five appealing and distinctive Suonate. His phrasing and colouring is at the same time understated and revelatory. His recent modern-piano recordings of Galuppi's Sonatas on RCA Red Seal, of Bach's English Suites on Decca and his Toccatas on Dynamic were all highly praised. Here, the alien sound of Bacchetti's instrument in historical terms is all but forgotten in these sensitive, timeless explorations.

Marcello's elder brother Alessandro is probably better remembered nowadays, chiefly for his Oboe Concerto in D minor. Benedetto's fine vocal music, both sacred and secular, was popular until the 20th century. Musicologist Eleanor Selfridge-Field, who provides the biographical essay for Marcello in New Grove, refers to his "perfunctory involvement with instrumental music", but such a remark belies the free-thinking modernity-through-simplicity of these almost anti-Bachian works.

Selfridge-Field is also the author of 'The Music of Benedetto and Alessandro Marcello: a Thematic Catalogue with Commentary on the Composers, Works and Sources' (Oxford, 1990), and in recent times an 'SF' number has begun to be attached to Marcello's works. They could have been of benefit here, where some of these Sonatas may or may not be related or identical to those in his lost op.3. What the accompanying notes explain, in a roundabout way, is that these versions are fruits of a new edition, prepared from original manuscripts held in the Marciana National Library in Venice by Bacchetti himself and by Mario Marcarini, author of those notes.

The notes themselves are well written, if with a slight foreign accent in translation, but also brief, with barely a mention of the music. A small note on the back inlay indicates that there are "ROM extras on CD", and it is there that the reader will find some historical background to the works and their source - although the extra text would have added very few extra sides to the booklet.

Such is the beauty of Marcello's Sonatas and the near-perfection of Bacchetti's interpretations, that the listener is inevitably left wondering why the eighty minutes of available CD space could not have been filled up more generously.

Review by Byzantion, MusicWeb International

Benedetto Marcello (1686-1739) was a mere eight years younger than his fellow Venetian Antonio Vivaldi and uses a similar musical language, readily heard in the 12 Flute Sonatas, Op 2, of 1712. His keyboard works are virtually unknown. All 12 of his Sonatas for harpsichord, Op 3, which appeared some time between 1712 and the Op 4 Madrigals of 1717, were given their world premiere recordings in 2000 by Italian keyboardist Roberto Loreggian, played on the harpsichord and using an edition prepared by Alessandro Borin. To hear any of the sonatas played on the piano is, in my experience, unique.

For this recording Andrea Bacchetti, in conjunction with Mario Marcarini, has prepared his own new edition from the manuscripts housed in Venice’s Marciana Library, and uses a Fazioli grand, taming its lively nature for music of tranquil intimacy. The result is one of almost pure delight. Anyone familiar with Bacchetti’s acclaimed recordings of Johann Sebastian Bach and Baldassare Galuppi (and if you haven’t heard them, you really should: 4/08, 3/09, 10/09, 9/10) will respond once more to the cool, patrician poise of his playing, quietly voiced, unassuming and, in the slow movements, intensely introspective. Repeats marked in my (no doubt outmoded) edition of a handful of the sonatas are observed only in No 9,
with ornaments played discreetly and kept to a minimum. The only movement which does not readily lend itself to the piano is
the opening of Sonata No 10 with its alternating passage of thirds and sixths, better suited to the plucking of the harpsichord. The booklet is silent on the music. For information on this you must download a pdf file from the CD.
