[quoteThis ninth volume in Naxos’ survey of Glazunov’s complete orchestral works includes all of the music inspired by Finnish folk music and mythology, with a couple of extra fillers in the form of the Overture solennelle and the Wedding March. The best work undoubtedly is the Karelian Legend, and it gets the best performance too, even if it doesn’t erase memories of Svetlanov on Melodiya. The Moscow Symphony Orchestra plays with feeling as well as style, though as usual Golovschin’s leadership is less than charismatic. This matters, because the music basically sounds as good as the conductor can make it, and while these performances won’t disappoint anyone unfamiliar with these particular works (assuming you warm to Glazunov to begin with), an extra shot of adrenaline might have turned a pleasant listening experience into a really exciting one.
