A great legendary classic that this album compiled in 2001 by Deutsche Grammophon and bringing together recordings from 1959 and 1960, among the very last of Ferenc Fricsay already very affected by the disease — a stomach cancer from which he suffered since 1957 and which will prevail in February 1963. Everything is magnificent there, whether it is the Symphony n ° 9 "Du nouveau monde", superbly conducted and colorful, and so poignant with nostalgia in the "Lento" — to be counted in the top lot of the best versions —, then the Moldau of a freshness and a magical fluidity, by unanimous opinion the most beautiful recorded by Fricsay — and also one of the most beautiful of the discography —, and finally Liszt's Preludes as convincing as grandiose. This concentration of music demonstrates how gifted the Czech conductor was and shone in the firmament, especially in the Slavic repertoire. © Qobuz / GG
