This monograph covers topics in the cohomology of monoids up through recent developments. Jonathan Leech’s original monograph in the Memoirs of the American Mathematical Society dates back to 1975. This book is an organized, accessible, and self-contained account of this cohomology that includes more recent significant developments that were previously scattered among various publications, along with completely new material. It summarizes the original Leech theory and provides a modern and thorough treatment of the cohomological classification of coextensions of both monoids and monoidal groupoids, including the case of monoids with operators. This cohomology is also compared to the classical Eilenberg-Mac Lane and Hochschild-Mitchell cohomologies. Connections are also established with the Lausch-Loganathan cohomology theory for inverse semigroups, the Gabriel-Zisman cohomology of simplicial sets, the Wells cohomology of small categories (also known as Baues-Wirschingcohomology), Grothendieck sheaf cohomology, and finally Beck’s triple cohomology. It also establishes connections with Grillet’s cohomology theory for commutative semigroups.

This book contains the proceedings of the conference "Fractals in Graz 2001 - Analysis, Dynamics, Geometry, Stochastics" that was held in the second week of June 2001 at Graz University of Technology, in the capital of Styria, southeastern province of Austria. The scientific committee of the meeting consisted of M. Barlow (Vancouver), R. Strichartz (Ithaca), P. Grabner and W. Woess (both Graz), the latter two being the local organizers and editors of this volume. We made an effort to unite in the conference as well as in the present pro­ ceedings a multitude of different directions of active current work, and to bring together researchers from various countries as well as research fields that all are linked in some way with the modern theory of fractal structures. Although (or because) in Graz there is only a very small group working on fractal structures, consisting of "non-insiders", we hope to have been successful with this program of wide horizons. All papers were written upon explicit invitation by the editors, and we are happy to be able to present this representative panorama of recent work on poten­ tial theory, random walks, spectral theory, fractal groups, dynamic systems, fractal geometry, and more. The papers presented here underwent a refereeing process.

The first five chapters of this book form an introductory course in piece­ wise-linear topology in which no assumptions are made other than basic topological notions. This course would be suitable as a second course in topology with a geometric flavour, to follow a first course in point-set topology, andi)erhaps to be given as a final year undergraduate course. The whole book gives an account of handle theory in a piecewise­ linear setting and could be the basis of a first year postgraduate lecture or reading course. Some results from algebraic topology are needed for handle theory and these are collected in an appendix. In a second appen­ dix are listed the properties of Whitehead torsion which are used in the s-cobordism theorem. These appendices should enable a reader with only basic knowledge to complete the book. The book is also intended to form an introduction to modern geo­ metric topology as a research subject, a bibliography of research papers being included. We have omitted acknowledgements and references from the main text and have collected these in a set of "historical notes" to be found after the appendices.
