A Survey of Binary Systems

A Survey of Binary Systems by Richard Hubert Bruck
English | PDF | 1971 | 195 Pages | ISBN : 3662428377 | 18.2 MB

The area of mathematics surveyed by the present report might be described as a little too broad to be treated in an encyclopedic manner in a reasonable space and yet not sufficiently developed in all its parts to warrant several distinct reports. Group theory and lattice theory are both regarded as outside the scope of the report. Subject to this restriction, the area surveyed is the algebraic theory of systems with a single binary operation. The operation is understood to be single- valued except in the case of multigroups and allied systems. Since quasigroups, for example, can be studied either in terms of a single binary operation or in terms of three, a little of the theory of general algebras enters quite naturally. A diagram indicating the interrelations of the various systemswill be found at the end of Chapter li.

Topics in Matroid Theory By Leonidas S. Pitsoulis
English | EPUB (True) | 2014 | 138 Pages | ISBN : 1461489563 | 3.3 MB

Topics in Matroid Theory provides a brief introduction to matroid theory with an emphasis on algorithmic consequences.Matroid theory is at the heart of combinatorial optimization and has attracted various pioneers such as Edmonds, Tutte, Cunningham and Lawler among others. Matroid theory encompasses matrices, graphs and other combinatorial entities under a common, solid algebraic framework, thereby providing the analytical tools to solve related difficult algorithmic problems. The monograph contains a rigorous axiomatic definition of matroids along with other necessary concepts such as duality, minors, connectivity and representability as demonstrated in matrices, graphs and transversals. The author also presents a deep decomposition result in matroid theory that provides a structural characterization of graphic matroids, and show how this can be extended to signed-graphic matroids, as well as the immediate algorithmic consequences.

English | EPUB (True) | 2018 | 460 Pages | ISBN : 3662574128 | 29.3 MB

This volume contains 17 surveys that cover many recent developments in Discrete Geometry and related fields. Besides presenting the state-of-the-art of classical research subjects like packing and covering, it also offers an introduction to new topological, algebraic and computational methods in this very active research field. The readers will find a variety of modern topics and many fascinating open problems that may serve as starting points for research.

These Lecture Notes provide an introduction to the study of those discrete surfaces which are obtained by randomly gluing polygons along their sides in a plane. The focus is on the geometry of such random planar maps (diameter, volume growth, scaling and local limits…) as well as the behavior of statistical mechanics models on them (percolation, simple random walks, self-avoiding random walks…).

Mathematical Problems and Proofs: Combinatorics, Number Theory, and Geometry by Branislav Kisačanin
English | PDF | 2002 | 218 Pages | ISBN : 0306459671 | 5.1 MB

A gentle introduction to the highly sophisticated world of discrete mathematics, Mathematical Problems and Proofs presents topics ranging from elementary definitions and theorems to advanced topics – such as cardinal numbers, generating functions, properties of Fibonacci numbers, and Euclidean algorithm. This excellent primer illustrates more than 150 solutions and proofs, thoroughly explained in clear language. The generous historical references and anecdotes interspersed throughout the text create interesting intermissions that will fuel readers' eagerness to inquire further about the topics and some of our greatest mathematicians. The author guides readers through the process of solving enigmatic proofs and problems, and assists them in making the transition from problem solving to theorem proving.
