Dating from 1962 to 2008, these recordings display the diversity of India. Encompassing classic filmi offerings, electronica from the Asian Underground and gorgeous vocals from Bollywood icons such as Asha Bhosle and Lata Mangeshkar, these selections reveal how the sounds of India impact and intertwine with music from around the globe.

Smokestack really goes for the best of the best here – sorting out cuts with massively funky drums, weird sitar bits, offbeat vocals, and other hip touches – very much on the funkiest side of the Bollywood sound of the 70s.

Elektro Guzzi are a Viennese trio who deceptively perform what sounds like digitally sculpted techno on a trad set-up of bass, guitar and drums. They've earned an enviable reputation as a live act performing this highly structured conceit, playing everywhere from Japan to Berlin without even releasing a record. Their debut album is produced by fellow Austrian auteur Patrick Pulsinger and released through Stefan Goldmann's highly respected Macro imprint. Remarkably each of the ten tracks were recorded live without overdubs in a feat of motorik precision that genuinely defies belief. Carrying a lineage from Klaus Dinger's role in Kraftwerk and Neu!, Bernhard Breuer keeps time like a Swiss watch while Jakob Schneidewind 's bass repeats stoically groovy signatures and Bernhard Hammer's guitar morphinto unfathomably machine like shapes that will probably baffle us until we actually see them performing live. Impressive.

The guitar bruisers in Dead Meadow dropped OLD GROWTH in early 2008 a year after relocating to the City of Angels from Washington D.C. One of the bands most committed to extollingthe unflagging power of the riff, Dead Meadow have made an album that simply explodes with one guitar-driven epiphany after another. Though the songs have a sprawling quality–enhanced by guitarist/vocalist Jason Simon's heroic acid-drenched solos–they remain compact and smartly written, expertly shifting in tone and texture from swampy darkness to a righteous head-banging apex, with bits of singer-songwriter jangle in between. OLD GROWTH is one of the earliest indie gems of 2008.

"In the late 1970s, Joe Isaacs put together a unique dub/disco/reggae project called Risco Connection. The group released multiple 12" singles covering classic disco tracks in an inspired Jamaica-Funk fashion, a style still considered something of a novelty in the mainstream at the time, and in the process successfully put their stamp on the original versions. Far ahead of their time, Risco Connection is more popular today than they ever were 30 years ago and this 12 track unreleased album is a must have for any fan of good foot-moving bottom heavy groove music."

'To Lose My Life' is the debut album from West London post-punk outfit White Lies, who have been compared to many bands, including Joy Division and Arcade Fire. Received positively and slated as a contender for the Mercury Music Prize, To Lose My Life was produced by Ed Buller and Max Dingel, who have previously worked with The Killers and Glasvegas. The album includes the singles, 'Unfinished Business', 'Death', 'To Lose My Life' and 'From The Stars'.
