Evolution of Semantic Systems

Evolution of Semantic Systems by Bernd-Olaf Küppers
English | PDF | 2013 | 241 Pages | ISBN : 364234996X | 3.3 MB

Complex systems in nature and society make use of information for the development of their internal organization and the control of their functional mechanisms. Alongside technical aspects of storing, transmitting and processing information, the various semantic aspects of information, such as meaning, sense, reference and function, play a decisive part in the analysis of such systems.

Search Theory: A Game Theoretic Perspective by Steve Alpern
English | PDF | 2013 | 299 Pages | ISBN : 1461468248 | 3.9 MB

Search games and rendezvous problems have received growing attention in computer science within the past few years. Rendezvous problems emerge naturally, for instance, to optimize performance and convergence of mobile robots. This gives a new algorithmic point of view to the theory. Furthermore, modern topics such as the spreading of gossip or disease in social networks have lead to new challenging problems in search and rendezvous.

Modelling and Controlling of Behaviour for Autonomous Mobile Robots

Modelling and Controlling of Behaviour for Autonomous Mobile Robots by Hendrik Skubch
English | PDF | 2013 | 264 Pages | ISBN : 3658008105 | 1.9 MB

As research progresses, it enables multi-robot systems to be used in more and more complex and dynamic scenarios. Hence, the question arises how different modelling and reasoning paradigms can be utilised to describe the intended behaviour of a team and execute it in a robust and adaptive manner. Hendrik Skubch presents a solution, ALICA (A Language for Interactive Cooperative Agents) which combines modelling techniques drawn from different paradigms in an integrative fashion. Hierarchies of finite state machines are used to structure the behaviour of the team such that temporal and causal relationships can be expressed. Utility functions weigh different options against each other and assign agents to different tasks. Finally, non-linear constraint satisfaction and optimisation problems are integrated, allowing for complex cooperative behaviour to be specified in a concise, theoretically well-founded manner.

Case-Based Reasoning: A Textbook by Michael M. Richter
English | PDF(True) | 2013 | 550 Pages | ISBN : 364240166X | 8.3 MB

While it is relatively easy to record billions of experiences in a database, the wisdom of a system is not measured by the number of its experiences but rather by its ability to make use of them. Case-based reasoning (CBR) can be viewed as experience mining, with analogical reasoning applied to problem–solution pairs. As cases are typically not identical, simple storage and recall of experiences is not sufficient, we must define and analyze similarity and adaptation. The fundamentals of the approach are now well-established, and there are many successful commercial applications in diverse fields, attracting interest from researchers across various disciplines.

From Linear Operators to Computational Biology: Essays in Memory of Jacob T. Schwartz by Martin Davis
English | PDF | 2013 | 213 Pages | ISBN : 1447142810 | 2.5 MB

In his rich and varied career as a mathematician, computer scientist, and educator, Jacob T. Schwartz wrote seminal works in analysis, mathematical economics, programming languages, algorithmics, and computational geometry. In this volume of essays, his friends, students, and collaborators at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences present recent results in some of the fields that Schwartz explored: quantum theory, the theory and practice of programming, program correctness and decision procedures, dextrous manipulation in Robotics, motion planning, and genomics. In addition to presenting recent results in these fields, these essays illuminate the astonishingly productive trajectory of a brilliant and original scientist and thinker.

Computer Performance Optimization: Systems - Applications - Processes

Computer Performance Optimization: Systems - Applications - Processes by Wolfgang W. Osterhage
English | PDF | 2013 | 169 Pages | ISBN : 3642299709 | 5.1 MB

Computing power performance was important at times when hardware was still expensive, because hardware had to be put to the best use. Later on this criterion was no longer critical, since hardware had become inexpensive. Meanwhile, however, people have realized that performance again plays a significant role, because of the major drain on system resources involved in developing complex applications. This book distinguishes between three levels of performance optimization: the system level, application level and business processes level. On each, optimizations can be achieved and cost-cutting potentials can be identified. The book presents the relevant theoretical background and measuring methods as well as proposed solutions. An evaluation of network monitors and checklists rounds out the work.
