Chanticleer: Colors Of Love
Contemporary Classical, Choral | 1999 | 64:07 | EAC (FLAC, cue, no log) | Front cover | 231 MB

This recording received the 1999 Grammy Award for "Best Small Ensemble Performance (with or without Conductor).

World premiere recordings of these choral pieces! More than half of them were commissioned by Chanticleer. John Tavener's "Village Wedding" fuses a 20th Century Greek poem with the Orthodox marriage ceremony. Steven Stucky created "Cradle Songs" using lullabies from Brazil, Poland and Tobago as launching pads for hypnotically modern harmonies. There are seven brief songs by Pulitzer Prize winner Bernard Rands, whose sharply dissonant, thickly harmonic music is the setting for poems from James Joyce's "Chamber Music." Rands' wife, Augusta Read Thomas, contributes six songs, five of which are epigrams about love used to launch aural experimentation. As always, Chanticleer's performance is exquisite, all the more impressive given the extremely challenging material presented here.
