The Virgin as a subject for painting has inspired so many masterpieces that one volume could not possibly contain them all. In the main, therefore, we have limited our choice to paintings of the Virgin and Child from the Thirteenth Century to the end of the Renaissance, although a few examples from other periods, as well as of other themes, have also been included where appropriate.
