Flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal was a musical giant, doing much to popularize the flute and to broaden the acceptance of Baroque music; he was the first player to establish the flute as a presence in the international concert world. His recording career extended from the era of 78 rpm recording to that of compact discs, and he was among the most frequently recorded artists of all time. Rampal was born in Marseille on January 7, 1922. His father, Joseph Rampal, was a flute teacher and the first flutist of the Marseille Symphony Orchestra, and he gave Jean-Pierre his first lessons beginning at the age of 12. Joseph Rampal tried to steer his son away from a musical career, and Jean-Pierre began to study medicine. In 1943, however, German occupation forces conscripted him, and he discovered that he was going to be sent to Germany as a forced laborer. Rampal went absent without leave, joined the French Resistance, and made his way to Paris under a new identity.

In January we celebrate the centenary of the greatest flautist in history, Jean-Pierre Rampal. The 1960s and 1970s mark the high point of Rampal’s collaboration with Erato with an outstanding series of landmark recordings, each of which being more beautiful than the other. In particular, two memorable baroque monographies are published.
One contains a large part of Handel’s flute sonatas (from the Op. 1 to the spurious Halle Sonatas) recorded with long-time keyboard accompanist Robert Veyron-Lacroix and was awarded a Grand Prix du disque. The other contains all the Vivaldi concertos with flute, including uncomplete ones then recorded for the first time ever! It also marks the beginning of a long and fruitful partnership with conductor Claudio Scimone.

The French division of the massive EMI corporation has released a compendium called Les Introuvables de Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (EMI 68509, six CDs), and it contains so much outstanding material that one feels churlish complaining about what it lacks. But here we go. These six discs contain more than 125 lieder, ballads, cantatas and songs – primarily in German, but also in French, Italian, Latin and English – recorded mostly in the 1950s and '60s when Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's voice was one of the wonders of the musical universe.

I have heard for so many years that the guitar is not a true classical instrument worthy of of a place in the symphony. Here you have a masterful recording from a composer that was a contemporary of Beethoven. It trully rivals anything I have heard form that period! I have been a Carulli fan ever since I started studying classical guitar. I love either playing or listening to his works. With nearly four hundred opus numbers, he has something to offer even the most discriminating classical music lover. This particular recording has a nice mix of concertos and duets for guitar and flute that seem to be the perfect combination for music that soars along.

The most comprehensive edition devoted to Gioachino Rossini marking his 150th anniversary.
Born in 1792, Rossini was the most popular opera composer of his time. Although he retired from the Opera scene in 1829, he continued to compose in other genres, including sacred music, piano and chamber works. He did gather his late works under the ironic title Péchés de vieillesse (Sins of Old Age), which veils a true collection of masterworks.
