Steven John Isserlis is one of the leading internationally ranked cellists. He plays a wide range of repertory and is noted for using gut strings and a great deal of vibrato. He is the grandson of Russian composer and pianist Julius Isserlis and can trace his family tree back to connections with both Karl Marx and Felix Mendelssohn. He spent most of his teenage years (1969-1976) at the International Cello Centre as a pupil of Jane Cowan, who required her students to read Goethe's Faust in order to understand Beethoven better and memorize Racine to know the sound of the language when playing French music.

Recorded live at The Paris Cinema & The Other, London, England. 1967-1971. This is a seriously fascinating series that is being done by a guy called Hummus905. He has taken mono (and sometimes stereo) recordings, and separated them into individual stems representing the different instruments. Then he remixes and and remasters the stems into a new stereo version. The results are not at all like those "simulated stereo" mixes you've heard in the past.

Fans of singer, songwriter, and Brit-folk chanteuse Bridget St. John will no doubt be delighted by this double-disc, 41-cut selection of her BBC recordings with John Peel and other DJs from the late '60s through the mid-'70s. Peel was hosting Top Gear at this time, and took over the network’s Night Ride program from producer John Muir in 1968. St. John appeared on Night Ride first and that initial off-air rehearsal performance is here, near the end of disc two at her insistence, though its audio quality is not as high as most on this handsome package.

Progressive Rock

BBC in Concert is one of those miraculous archival finds that one just can't anticipate and dares not hope for. Apart from Yes (always the exception to a lot of rules), very few progressive rock bands managed to get themselves recorded live under optimum conditions, much less so early in their careers…

Released to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first single and first John Peel session. 38 tracks from 1977-1981, including exclusive sessions and Radio One 'In Concert' recordings.
Twenty-five years ago this year, with a snotty little ditty called "In the City", The Jam–angry young men in undersized school uniforms, featuring a singer with a seemingly permanent pair of blocked sinuses–introduced their vibrant young proletarian vitriol to the refuge-strewn streets of jubilee punk Britain. It's time then, in typically silveresque anniversary fashion, to celebrate two and a half decades of Weller and co. with this portable three-CD box set of rarely heard sessions from the secretively maintained BBC archives. The 56 tracks are drawn from sessions and live shows, encompassing the years 1977 to 1981 and thereby concluding with the introduction of brass, borrowed Beatles bass riffs, blue-eyed soul, and ski-influenced knitwear.
