Bringing together over 50 of Jamaica's greatest session musicians, whose work spans from the birth of reggae in the late 1960s until today, Roots Architects is the largest gathering of Jamaican musical talent on one all-instrumental album. Never before have so many veterans, who helped create the immortal rhythms that made reggae internationally successful, been assembled to play on new material without vocals. This album aims to celebrate and pay tribute to the unsung heroes of reggae music: the rhythm builders or Roots Architects.

Ken Boothe was the most soulful singer of the rocksteady era, often likened to a Jamaican Wilson Pickett, and his mid-'60s recordings for Clement "Coxsone" Dodd's Studio One label were and are among the genre's most coveted sides. In 1970, he moved to Leslie Kong's Beverley's imprint for this album, which continued his string of hits with the songs "Why Baby Why," "Now I Know," and the title tune, "Freedom Street." We've remastered this landmark reggae/rocksteady release to make it sound better than it ever has, and pressed it up in a red & yellow swirl vinyl edition limited to just 300 copies!

Human relationships are also touched upon (“Boxing Clever”), along with a touching tribute to the late great Ranking Roger from The Beat (“Parade The Crown”).

Dan Del Santo may very well be the greatest musician you've never heard of. He was a true staple of the Austin local music scene in his time, but without proper distribution to take his music further, and a career brought to a screeching halt from having to flee the country during the war on drugs in 1990, he faded into relative obscurity. Utopia Unearthed is working with Dan's family and friends to resurrect his music, as well as document his life and career.
