Psych rockers All Them Witches are following Lightning at the Door with their third album, Dying Surfer Meets His Maker, on October 30 via New West Records (their first for the label). There are undoubtedly some throwback vibes to their sound, but ATW sound like they have bigger goals in mind than simply being a retro band. The album's new single "Dirt Preachers" has clear production and the kind of big, catchy melodies that could've broke on the radio just as easily in 1975 as 2005. It probably won't now though, which says more about rock radio than it does about the strength of this song.

All Them Witches are a neo-psychedelic, dark blues quartet from Nashville. They unapologetically use the music of earlier eras to forge a loose, spacy, hard rock sound of their own. While it is easy to pick out influences – including Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Mountain, Gris-Gris and Sun, Moon & Herbs-era Dr. John, and the electric Delta swamp blues of Junior Kimbrough – it is much more difficult to pin them down due to a unique meld of crafted songwriting and spacious grooves. This, the fourth full-length release for the psychedelic rock band led by Charles Michael Parks Jr., was produced by Dave Cobb.

By most bands’ fifth LP, the sound is pretty set. Parameters established. Refinement dissipated in favor of formulaic execution of what’s worked in the past. Fair enough. All Them Witches take a harder route.

All Them Witches are known for their loud and lengthy live shows - 2020 found the band releasing their critically acclaimed album, Nothing As The Ideal - An album release from this band would traditionally be followed by a lengthy 18-month tour across the globe. Due to an international pandemic, the band's touring plans were brought to a halt. This did not stop All Them Witches from assembling in a studio to broadcast a live set for their fans. The set was roundly received as an amazing performance and fans immediately inquired as to whether or not this show would be available outside of the broadcast. All Them Witches have built a career out of playing music that can not be pigeonholed into one specific genre. Nothing as the Ideal was recorded in Studio 2 at the world famous Abbey Road with the help of longtime mixing engineer Mikey Allred. The history and vibe of that setting laid the groundwork for what was to come. The band’s signature psychedelic blues riffs, relentless drums, melodic bass lines and non-linear lyrics are all present. The resulting album is a thought provoking head banger that is the band's most cohesive album to date.
