Beethoven Complete Quartets by The Cleveland String Quartet
Classical | EAC APE, Image, cue, log | covers | 1,94 Gb
Telarc B000003D2W | 1997 | 8 CD

This is a very underestimated version of Beethoven's cycle ; It is simply one of the most achieved, along with the Budapest, Juilliard (first cycle), Vegh, Italiano and Talich. Cleveland Quartet pay a great attention to the structural aspect of Beethoven's writing, yet they never forget to sing admirably.

Artemis Quartet is maybe the most accomplished quartet of the past ten years, in my opinion much more perfect than, say the Prazak. They are making a recording of Beethoven complete cycle which will be, for sure, a new reference for the decade.

Beethoven Complete Piano Sonatas Wilhelm Backhaus (second cycle - stereo)
Classical | EAC: Flac, Image, cue, log | no scans | 2 Gb
Decca 433 882-2 | 1992 | 8 CD

This cycle, recorded between 1953 and 1969, is very controversial. It's reputation was allways better in Europe than in America. In my opinion, this is one of the greatest interpretations of Beethoven's sonatas, more important than the Schnabel's cycle, equal to Arrau's and Annie Fischer's. Backhaus's Beethoven is rude, straight and severe, but it is also profound and full of integrity.

Brilliant | Kogan edition vol. 4

Leonid Kogan, one of the best russian violonist of the century, has made many great recordings of the Tchaikovsky's concerto. This one, in 1950, with Nebolsin, is certainly his better attempt, and maybe the greatest version of this major work.
