Produced by Butch Vig and mixed by Alan Moulder, Wasting Light was recorded entirely on analog tape in the garage of Grohl s home in California s San Fernando Valley. Much like Paul Desmond, trumpeter Chet Baker led two musical lives early in his career. One was to play foil to Gerry Mulligan's cool-headed, contrapuntal baritone saxophone, in the process lending some much-needed warmth to the celebrated pianoless quartet in which Baker first came to prominence in 1952. But the real Chet Baker, the far-from-abstract romantic and popular musician, emerged full-blown on this with-strings session in 1954. Baker doesn't sing on this date, not with his voice anyway. His burnished, mid-register trumpet gracefully leads the way through picture-perfect autumnal settings provided by young arrangers Marty Paich, Johnny Mandel and Shorty Rogers.

This album is a beautifully crafted collection of melodic songs which I wasnt really expecting to like. JJ has a wonderfully rich voice that hooks you into the tune and especially the chorus. Lots of strings and some clever hooks make this a hybrid betweeen folk and dare I say 'middle of the road' but not in the 'corny' sence of the word. Never thought I'd enjoy this type of sound but I found I was entranced by the way the songs unravel and pull you in so that you dont push the pause or next track button and I have played this half a dozen times! Alex Skolnick is a true guitar hero. At sixteen years old, he joined a group of twenty- somethings who'd formed a thrash metal band called Testament. Alex stayed with the band through five critically acclaimed albums and countless tours with, among others, Slayer, Megadeth, Judas Priest, and White Zombie. After hearing and seeing one of Miles Davis electric bands on TV, Alex relocated to New York City to play and study jazz.
