Publisher:Nesfa Press; 1 edition (August 1, 2001) | ISBN: 1886778280 | 562 pages | epub+mobi | 805.53kb+1.1Mb

Here Comes Civilization: The Complete Science Fiction of William Tenn, Volume II, edited by James A. Mann and Mary C. Tabasko, celebrates the achievement of a preeminent SF author of the 1950s. With numerous stories published for the first time since their initial appearance in magazines, the complete body of Tenn's only novel and an analytic essay, this second volume should receive as much praise as the first, Immodest Proposals.

Publisher: Puffin (April 1, 1991) | ISBN: 0140345809 | 176 pages | epub+mobi | 118.43kb+185.13kb

One by one, five sixteen-year-old orphans are brought to a strange building. It is not a prison, not a hospital; it has no walls, no ceiling, no floor. Nothing but endless flights of stairs leading nowhere —except back to a strange red machine. The five must learn to love the machine and let it rule their lives. But will they let it kill their souls? This chilling, suspenseful indictment of mind control is a classic of science fiction and will haunt readers long after the last page is turned.

After the first two installation's of William W. Johnstone's horror series(The Devil's Kiss and the Devil's Heart), I was rather disappointed in the developments, or lack of, in The Devil's Touch… The story was very loosely put together, especially towards the end, where it seemed as if the author was just trying to finish the book…. In all honesty, if one were to read this series and leave this one out.. they wouldn't be missing much…. BOTTOM LINE: Serious drop off from "The Devil's Heart", which was by far the best of the first three books.

The Devil's Kiss is nothing more than an all you can eat buffet of exploitation movie chestnuts (aka cliches) consisting of sex, gun fights, sex, fist fights, sex, monsters, and sex. You have to love how Johnstone describes in loving detail all those wretched, kinky sexual acts while trying to sound like he is actually condemning them. And I never knew that the forces of evil were so incredibly well endowed. You aren't fooling me one bit Mr. Johnstone. Each book in the series is almost endearing in its sloppy, simple minded kind of way. So bad its pretty darn good.

The Devil's Heart introduces Sam Balon's son, who becomes the next in line to fight the hordes of Satan worshippers. Toss in a coven, gratuitous sex scenes, monsters, and lots of gunplay, and you have Johnstone's standard formula wrapped up in a neat bow. This novel is better written than the previous novel, THE DEVIL'S KISS.

Publisher: Yearling (December 29, 1998) | ISBN: 0440415800 | 288 pages | epub+mobi | 331.23 kb+513.22kb

Jay Berry Lee is happy until the summer he is 14 years old and discovers monkeys living in the creek bottoms near his parents' homestead. Set in the late 1800s, Summer of the Monkeys traces the boy's adventures as he attempts to capture 29 monkeys that have (it turns out) escaped from the circus. With somewhat dubious help from his grandfather, and over the objections of his mother, Jay goes about discovering that monkeys are much smarter and harder to catch than he thought possible. Woven into this story is a second theme about his physically disabled sister and the family's attempts to find money for an operation. As funny and touching as Wilson Rawls's Where the Red Fern Grows, this book will appeal to the young reader who has always wished for the freedom to run wild through the woods with nothing more pressing to do than find another rabbit hole–or escaped monkey.

Winston Churchill was not only a statesman and leader of historic proportions, he also possessed substantial literary talents. These two factors combine to make The Gathering Storm a unique work. The first volume of Churchill's memoirs, this selection is broken into two parts. The first, "From War to War," consists of Churchill's critical observations on the settlement of World War I and its place in the causes of the Second World War. The second volume contains letters and memoranda from the British government–of which Churchill was part–as the country plunged unprepared into war. This stands as the best of history: written as it was made, by the man who made it.

Yann Martel's imaginative and unforgettable Life of Pi is a magical reading experience, an endless blue expanse of storytelling about adventure, survival, and ultimately, faith. The precocious son of a zookeeper, 16-year-old Pi Patel is raised in Pondicherry, India, where he tries on various faiths for size, attracting "religions the way a dog attracts fleas." Planning a move to Canada, his father packs up the family and their menagerie and they hitch a ride on an enormous freighter. After a harrowing shipwreck, Pi finds himself adrift in the Pacific Ocean, trapped on a 26-foot lifeboat with a wounded zebra, a spotted hyena, a seasick orangutan, and a 450-pound Bengal tiger named Richard Parker ("His head was the size and color of the lifebuoy, with teeth").

Narrated by the Housekeeper, the characters are known only as the Professor and Root, the Housekeepers 10-year-old son, nicknamed by the Professor because the shape of his hair and head remind the Professor of the square root symbol.

Enjoy love story between Brett & Samantha: "You can't deny you enjoy my company!" Brett challenged. Samantha wouldn't admit it. Perhaps she was starry-eyed about Clive; though her father disliked him, she was sure he was the only man in the world for her. Brett Carrington had no right to criticize her or Clive-much less try to tell her she should marry him instead! It never occurred to Samantha that Brett might be right. Nor did she realize just how far he was prepared to pursue his campaign.
