Très connu dans les pays germanophones, dont les mélodies populaires l'ont en partie inspiré, cet opéra fantastique (Märchenspiel) d'Engelbert Humperdinck met en scène l'errance de Hänsel et Gretel, un frère et une sœur perdus dans la forêt, et leur rencontre avec une sorcière anthropophage, qui a construit pour les attirer une maison de pain d'épices. Créé en 1893 à Weimar avec Richard Strauss à la baguette, Hänsel et Gretel a été présenté en novembre et décembre 2015 au Wiener Staatsoper dans une nouvelle mise en scène d'Adrian Noble. Christian Thielemann, l’un des meilleurs connaisseurs du répertoire romantique, a réuni pour l'occasion une belle distribution lyrique : Daniela Sindram, qui a déjà interprété Hänsel à Brême, ou la soprano israélienne Chen Reiss, très à l’aise dans la musique viennoise, et plus particulièrement dans Mozart.
