Asta Nielsen, the greatest Danish diva of all time, has been reincarnated on the big screen with the revival of the 1919 silent film TOWARDS tHE LIGHT, produced by Nordisk Film and directed by Holger-Madsen. This special-edition DVD features a new score composed by some of Denmark's leading musicians: Jonas Struck, Kasper Tranberg, Mads Hyhne and P.O. Jørgens. TOWARDS THE LIGHT is a haunting story of dangerous temptation, a tale of the divine and the diabolical. Asta Nielsen plays an alluring, coquettish upper-class woman who, after being abandoned by her first love, sets out to seduce an evangelist. The New score was reccorded live at the sold-out Copenhagen Jazz House during "NatFilm," the biggest and most prestigious international film festival in Denmark. The group's one-of-a-kind score creates a unique, melodic and poetic atmosphere, only to have it shattered by a series of dynamic explosions.

Asta Nielsen was an ethereally beautiful silent-film actress who made only one sound film, then went into a long Garbo-like retirement. There are some strong parallels between Nielsen and Garbo, including some roles they both played (notably 'Mata Hari'). It's intriguing that Nielsen and Sarah Bernhardt both played the (male) title role in 'Hamlet'. Bernhardt played the role as a man when she was too old to play Ophelia; whilst Nielsen (astonishingly beautiful in male costume) played the role as a young woman who had been raised as a male. Most of Nielsen's career was in German films; 'Mod Lyset' (a German co-production) is one of only four films she made in her native Denmark. Nielsen is less beautiful and more matronly than usual here; in some shots, she looks distressingly like Carol Channing.
