Rosalyn Tureck was an American pianist and harpsichordist who was particularly associated with the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. Tureck did not only play Bach's music but had a wide ranging repertoire which included works by composers including Ludwig van Beethoven, Johannes Brahms, Frederic Chopin and William Schuman. Diamond's Piano Sonata No. 1 was written because the composer was inspired by Tureck's playing.
She studied at the Juilliard School where one of her teachers was Leon Theremin.
She made her debut at Carnegie Hall.
For a while she followed Wanda Landowska, harpsichordist whose performances, teaching, recordings and writings played a large role in playing Bach's keyboard music on a harpsichord but later on turned back to playing on the piano and most of her later recordings are for the piano.
She died in New York in 2003 at age 88.
