A series of duets with Ron Carter and French accordionist Richard Galliano. Not a common jazz instrument, the free-reed sound of the accordion on this recording is both subtle and lovely. Tempos range from ballads to medium, but tend to be on the slow side. Not breakthrough jazz, these duets (recorded live, in concert) are refreshing and what all good music should be, just good listening.
Two very different worlds are linked in the title of this album - the Paname (French argot for Paris) of Richard Galliano and the Manhattan of Ron Carter.
So, did the inspired improvisations, steeped in harmony and emotion, of the ‘new musette’ accordionist succeed in uniting with the elegant, rounded double bass of the titan of swing ?
Yes, they most certainly did! This live concert where each and every coda took on an aura of breathtaking tranquillity, celebrated the union of the earthy and the ethereal. At the peak of their performance, intoxicated by tumultuous quatrains in triple time, Ron Carter and Richard Galliano chanced a brief encounter of two cultures, creating the height of urban poetry in a fleeting moment of intensity.
Thanks to them, Paname and Manhattan are today but a long stolen kiss away.
The music on this CD bears passionate testament to this.
