2007 found Dirtnap Records taking things up a notch as fine purveyors of crisp power-pop driven punk. The Riff Randells' full-length, Doublecross, being a perfect case in point. Named after the main character in the movie Rock 'N' Roll High School, the Vancouver-based trio play sugary three-chord pop-punk full of romance and heartache that recalls the Donnas' pre-major label days, but without the campy jailbait vibe that proved to be that band's Achilles' heel. The surf hooks are infectious, the attitude effortlessly, breezily cool. The Riff Randles keep it sweet and genuine, with just enough bite to make the bubblegum snap.

Records-inspired pop punk around the Pacific Northwest. Their debut full-lenght, Struck Out Looking, was recorded in Atlanta by Joe King of The Queers. Later it was finished in Seattle at Crackle & Pop Studios by Johnny Sangster & finally released on CD by great Kid Tested Records.

Panic Button / Lookout! Records Release

In 1999 Mutant Pop Records was kind enough to unleash a seemingly harmless little platter by the Seattle band The Wanna-Bes, on an unsuspecting punk underground. Any pop-punk fan smart enough to put their chips on the table was treated to a top-class hook-filled, pop-injected, punk romp with more than a slight hint of a 50's Rock And Roll influence. The Wanna-Bes were truly something special. The fact that they meld their classic Ramones three-chord, balls-to-the-wall attack with sugary sweet vocals, and power-pop hooks puts them at the head of their class in Rock 'N' Roll High School and sends those other Ramones-core bands running scared… Here is the band's debut (and last) full-lenght album, released on Ben Weasel's Panic Button Records.

In the secret history of Rock & Roll, New York punk was America's Merseybeat, and the Ramones were its kings. Their sound - Johnny and Dee Dee's relentless guitar barrage paced by the flat thwat of Tommy's drums, and fronted by Joey's inimitable Anglo-Queens lead bleat-was ferociously exciting. Here, anew, were discovered the endless exhilarating possibilities of three basic chords, the fun of noise, the thrill of velocity. The grunge-and-thud of heavy metal were appropriated as formal elements (Of course!, we said, slapping our heads) and applied to glorious pop tunes (Brilliant!). Rock & Roll had seemed… almost dead, actually-tuckered and predictable, dozing off into a sort of post-60's dotage. The Ramones made it sound invincible again. Saved its life, you might say.

IMHO - the best sounding CD version

The Ramones saved Rock 'N' Roll. Assigned a mission by a muse so bored with the mechanical dance rhythms and vapid love songs of the middle 70's-a period of popular music wallowing in its own excremental excesses, the likes of which we hadn't experienced since the pre-Beatles 60's-this Goddess cast the fate of four lads from Queens to blast pop culture from its post-Watergate doldrums…

After a long hiatus, Good Charlotte gain perspective but definitely don’t lose their edge. On the aptly titled Youth Authority, the reunited pop-punk icons sound every bit as dangerous and energetic as they did when they formed two decades ago—from the nostalgic charge of every anthem to the comforting bounce of their choruses. “We’re not burning out,” Joel Madden shouts on its stormy closer. “We’re just moving on.”

Shonen Knife's first record without founding drummer (and later bassist) Atsuko Yamano is a bit more diverse than the previous few albums. With guitarist Naoko Yamano in full control, there is plenty of the patented Shonen Knife Rock and Roll, but also some more laid back numbers – "Birthday" and "Oyasumi" are both ballads, and "Las Vegas" has a slight country rock feel to it.
