Design of a Decade: 1986-1996 is a misleading title. The bulk of Janet Jackson's greatest-hits collection concentrates on Control and Rhythm Nation 1814, simply by contractual necessity. That is far from a fatal flaw. The hits from those two albums were state-of-the-art dance-pop productions at the time of their release, filled with bottomless beats and memorable, catchy hooks. None of the songs has lost any of its impact, from the funk of "Miss You Much" and "What Have You Done for Me Lately," to the ballads "Let's Wait Awhile" and "Come Back to Me." In addition to all 13 Top 40 hits from Control and Rhythm Nation…

With just a couple of cursory listens to the few tracks that popped up all over the Internet through 2007, comparisons were made between Adele, the much-hyped brassy British songstress, and Amy Winehouse, the…much-hyped brassy British songstress. However, after a solid listen to 19, the first full sampling by the up-and-coming Adele, listeners are forced to throw all comparisons to the wind; Adele is simply too magical to compare her to anyone. Bluesy like it's no one's business yet voluptuously funky in a contemporary way, Adele rocks out 19 with a unique voice and gritty sound that dazzle endlessly…

Anthony Hamilton is one of the leading lights of the neo-soul movement. And while it's easy to call his music retro given a vocal style that recalls Bill Withers and a rootsy yet modern-sounding production aesthetic clearly indebted to Stevie Wonder, Hamilton is more a product of his own tireless vision than of any sort of old-school fetishism. Although Hamilton tasted success a few times early in his career, he jumped from label to label and maintained a side career as a writer and backup singer. He's had a comfortable home with Jermaine Dupri's So So Def label since 2003, yet 2007's Southern Comfort proves that creating deep, organic soul has been the singer's M.O. since day one, as this album is, remarkably, his second collection of older, previously unreleased material. That his vaults are this stacked speaks volumes to Hamilton's talent. –AllMusic

R&B / Funk / Jazz Funk / Contemporary R&B / Urban / Quiet Storm

This was one of Mtume's '80s "sophisti-funk" projects, with a mix of socially conscious lyrics, love songs, and uptempo cuts, plus collective vocals and sparing production and arrangements. The title cut was a huge R&B hit, peaking at number two and even generating some crossover pop action. Mtume got two other R&B smashes, one in the Top 20, and the album proved one of his best. A former jazz percussionist, Mtume moved into urban contemporary and funk in the late '70s and became one of the more successful producers and performers in both styles during the '80s. The son of the great jazz saxophonist Jimmy Heath, Mtume was a conga player and percussionist who recorded and toured with Miles Davis and was featured on albums by the Heath Brothers, Sonny Rollins, Herbie Hancock, Joe Henderson, and Freddie Hubbard.
