A singer/songwriter of considerable grace and wit, Nick Lowe pioneered pub rock and punk, then settled into a dignified third act as an elegant crooner. Lowe started his career as the nominal leader of Brinsley Schwarz, a ragged collection of hippies that helped create the pub rock circuit of the early 1970s. Heavily influenced by the Band, the Brinsleys were at the forefront of a British back-to-basics rock & roll that eventually mutated into punk rock.

CLASSIC FESTIVAL APPEARANCE BY LOWE, EDMUNDS & ROCKPILE IN 1980 • This newly discovered radio broadcast recording presents one of the early afternoon highlights of the festival, Rockpile. • The invigorating sound of Rockpile was based on the strengths of Lowe and Edmunds, who shared a love of late 1950s/early 1960s pop and rock & roll, but who had distinctively different approaches. Edmunds was clearly a retro-rocker, obsessed with the sound of Sun Studios and Phil Spector. Lowe, on the other hand, preferred things loose and ragged and was primarily interested in capturing raw energy and passion. It is this approach that connected Lowe to the punk and new wave scene in England.

Nick Lowe's 1998 album Dig My Mood marked the second masterpiece of his "worldly balladeer" and "elder statesman of rock and roll" chapter of his career, leaving the ironic power popper persona of his Jesus of Cool days far behind. Following 1994's critically-acclaimed The Impossible Bird, Lowe found himself writing about love and hardship through a sophisticated lens, including celebrated staples of the Nick Lowe canon such as "You Inspire Me" and "Man That I've Become," both fixtures of Nick's setlists a quarter-century later. Featuring Lowe's razorsharp songwriting and a selection of tasteful covers that Nick breathes new life into (Henry McCullough's "Failed Christian" and Ivory Joe Hunter's "Cold Grey Light of Dawn''), Dig My Mood is another masterclass example of Lowe's strength as a composer and performer.

Among musicians, Arthur Alexander was always considered one of the greatest R&B songwriters. Both the Beatles and the Rolling Stones covered his songs, "Anna (Go to Him)" and "You Better Move On," respectively, early in their careers. But they weren't the only ones – throughout the years, his work was rich source material for many blues, soul, rock, and country artists. He may have earned the recognition of his peers, but he remained relatively unknown to the general public, right up to his death in 1993. In order to raise his profile, Razor & Tie released Adios Amigo: A Tribute to Arthur Alexander in 1994, assembling a stellar and diverse lineup to record new versions of his songs. The diversity and the fresh arrangements illustrates the depth of Alexander's songs and how well they lent themselves to new readings. Like any tribute album, Adios Amigo is uneven, with a few tracks falling flat, but the best moments – Elvis Costello's "Sally Sue Brown," Robert Plant's "If It's Really Got to Be This Way," Chuck Jackson's "You Better Move On," Frank Black's "Old John Amos," John Prine's "Lonely Just Like Me," Gary U.S. Bonds' "Genie in the Jug," Graham Parker's "Every Day I Have to Cry" and Nick Lowe's "In the Middle of It All" – are affectionate salutes to a departed master, and they're damn enjoyable in their own right as well.

EXCEPTIONAL BROADCAST RECORDING FROM AN OCCASIONAL QUARTET John Hiatt’s Bring The Family album, released in 1987, introduced the veteran minstrel to a new generation of fans. Choc- Full of supreme compositions, it also featured one-hell of a line-up. Hiatt of course did most of the singing and strummed a sad acoustic, the mighty Ry Cooder handled electric guitars and a little sitar on one number, Nick Lowe played his signature bass and the man who banged the drum for everyone from Bob Dylan to The Manhattan Transfer, , the wholly underrated Jim Keltner, kept time superbly. The easy way this quartet clicked was what led to the album Little Village in 1992, but the group’s one and only album together, while it didn’t take off commercially, certainly hasn’t dated since. In the album’s wake the Villagers hit the road; veterans to a man of the live circuit, the shows were a magnificent spectacle.

Released in 1991 on Pointblank, this audiophile treat finds the 'Hook in some very special company. Co-producers Roy Rogers, Ry Cooder and Carlos Santana (who all contribute musically on this title as well) persuaded the likes of Albert Collins, Robert Cray, John Hammond, Johnnie Johnson, Van Morrison, Keith Richards, Nick Lowe and Johnny Winter among others to join in and the result is one terrific record. This original analog recording is beautifully recorded and a highlight to the ump-teenth rejuvenation in the 'Hooks career.

COODER AND LOWE BACK TOGETHER AFTER ALMOST 30 YEARS Their first collaboration since the early 1990s when, alongside John Hiatt and Jim Keltner, they were, collectively, one half of the short-lived, supergroup Little Village, Ry Cooder and Nick Lowe s tour of Japan, Australia and New Zealand in 2009 was something of a revelation. Performing cuts written by each, a number of choice cover versions, plus the co-composed, One Of These Days, You re Gonna Pay , the duo s show at The Orchard Hall in Tokyo on 11th November was possibly the finest concert these two mavericks performed together during this welcome jaunt. Featured in its entirety on this new CD and available here for the first time, this broadcast recording is certain to become a must-have release for fans of this pair of old - perhaps - but quite perfectly matured, timers!

Nick Lowe's 2001 album The Convincer established him as an elder statesman of rock and roll, far removed from the ironic power popper he was in the 1970s. The album arrived in a different world than the day before, releasing on September 11, 2001. These were songs for troubled times ("I'm a Mess," "Lately I've Let Things Slide") and Nick's songwriting was never sharper, with Mojo Magazine saying "Nick Lowe has made the album of his career." For the album’s 20th anniversary, three bonus tracks are added to the album: a long-lost Lowe-original called “Different Kind of Blue,” an acoustic cover of The Shirelles’ “Mama Said,” and a stripped-back rendition of The Chi-lites’ “There Will Never Be Any Peace (Until God Is Seated at the Conference Table).”

While “Cowboy Outfit” has a slightly different meaning as UK Slang, Nick Lowe and His Cowboy Outfit marks a turn towards a more rootsy persona for our hero. Anchored by the international number one “Half a Boy and Half a Man”, the album introduces a tex-mex/roller-rink organ sound, although the lineup of Bobby Irwin, Paul Carrack, Martin Belmont and Lowe is essentially unchanged. Newly discovered Johnny Horton covers “Honky Tonk Hardwood Floor” and “Walk on By” (included here as bonus tracks) show that there may have been a more twangy intention to the record– but as it is full on rockers like “Maureen” and Mickey Jupp’s “You’ll Never Get Me Up (in One of Those)” rub shoulders with pop like Dusty Springfield’s “Breakaway” and Nick’s own “L.A.F.S.” (featuring the TKO Horns who had recently punched up arranger Elvis Costello’s own “Everyday I Write the Book”).

Lowe once the cheeky chappy of British post-punk and New Wave – had a life before his great songs like What's So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding and his production work for Elvis Costello, Dr Feelgood, Graham Parker and others.
He'd been in pub rock bands before punk and had one eye on American country music as much as the bar for a few pints in Brinsley Schwarz and Rockpile.

"You Stabbed Me in the Front" and "Rocket Coast" could've fit perfectly on the album, showcasing Nick's unrivaled wit and razor-sharp songwriting. The demo for “Rocky Road” shows an early example of how the studio cut came to be, and the demo for "Don't Think About Her" would later become fully realized when Little Village, Nick's supergroup with Ry Cooder, John Hiatt and Jim Keltner, released their self-titled album in 1992.

The band rolls through a version of Rockpile's "Pet You and Hold You," followed by an electric performance of "Cracking Up" from Nick's Labour of Lust. Nick the Knife is one of master songwriter, producer and performer Nick Lowe's most underrated albums, and these demos and rarities give insight into his recording process at the time. The demo version of "Heart" shows its reggae-influenced guitar work that separates it from Rockpile's version, and the demo of "Raining Raining" exhibits Nick's vocal range that makes it sound like a long-lost soulful classic. Also included is the rarity "I Got a Job," a funny but rocking number that gets Nick laughing.

The limited edition EP features two new originals from Nick, "Lay It On Me Baby" and "Don't Be Nice to Me," plus a cover of Dorsey Burnette's "Here Comes That Feeling" (made famous by Brenda Lee). Nick's wordplay and razor-sharp lyrics shine bright with the twang-friendly tones of Los Straitjackets behind him.
