The Lehar hits are a predictable overture/waltz selection, but the performances by Janos Sandor and the Budapest Philharmonic are ideal, ablaze with color and striking rhythmic elasticity (the Budapest rubato is more daring than the Viennese). Sandor programs the standalone concert-waltz masterpiece GOLD UND SILBER as well as rarer selections from FRASQUITA and EVA, and in the PAGANINI extract there's a stellar violin solo played by Istvan Tamas. These performances are so wholly within the authentic Lehar idiom that I rank them alongside the reference standards conducted by Paulik, Boskovsky and Lehar himself. Sandor (1933-2010), it turns out, was born to do this.

Hungarian pianist Annie Fischer made her debut at the age of 10 and studied with Ernst von Dohnányi at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music. Her performance of the Liszt Sonata in B minor won Fischer first prize at the 1933 Liszt International Piano Competition, but her concert career was barely underway when war broke out; Fischer fled to Sweden. Afterwards Fischer returned to Hungary, and although she made her New York debut in 1961, she was only seldom seen in the United States and based her career in continental Europe.

The works for cello and piano are the most exquisite, emblematic pieces of the master's chamber music oeuvre. On our recording refreshingly light variations on the themes of The Magic Flute and of Judas Maccabaeus are played between the five weighty sonatas."…to me, Beethoven is not just about freedom, equality, fraternity. He is not only the inventor of the cello sonata as a genre. But he is a teacher of unconditional love. Humor. And humanity.” (Ildikó Szabó)

A new recording of a work as often recorded as the Concerto for Orchestra should offer something unusual, as well, and this disc does. Kossuth, a 20-minute symphonic poem, was the 22-year-old composer's first major orchestral composition. The conception owes much to Richard Strauss and the style to Liszt, but there are plenty of hints of material that show up in his mature works. The Village Scenes is a particularly exciting choral-orchestral expansion of a work originally for voices and piano, and the Concerto of course, is enormously popular.

Adam Fischer was born into a family of conductors. His father Sándor Fischer conducted the Budapest Radio Orchestra. His brother Iván, and a cousin, György, are also conductors. The Fischers lived across the street from the Budapest Opera House, and he attended his first concert at the age of five. When Haydn's "Surprise" Symphony was played, he decided to be a conductor so he could make the audience jump. He made his conducting debut at the age of 7, leading an ensemble of children playing toy instruments and singing.

Remembered in the west almost solely for his Soviet-era ballet The Red Poppy – and even then, for one popular selection from it, the energetic "Dance of the Russian Sailors" – Reinhold Glière is long overdue for a revival. If this 2006 recording by the Pulzus String Quartet of two of Glière's four string quartets gives any indication of his music's potential appeal, then it's high time that this neglected oeuvre is reassessed, both by ensembles in search of new repertoire and labels in need of fresh material.

With the exception of listeners who seem afflicted with an addiction for giga-obscure repertoire, such items as Hungaraton's Hans Koessler, Emanuel Moór: Chamber Works would normally register only as an automatic "pass-me-by" choice when found in the bins of classical music retail outlets. If your taste runs to Romantic chamber music, however, you should not overlook this one. The key piece here is the remarkable Sonata No. 2 for cello & piano, Op. 55, by Emanuel Moór, written in 1900 for cellist Anatoli Brandukov, the dedicatee of Rachmaninov's Cello Sonata and Glazunov's Chant du ménéstral.

Michael Haydn was a great composer — just not as great as his older brother Franz Joseph. The two were both highly regarded during their lifetimes. But over time Franz Joseph’s popularity completely eclipsed Michael’s.To be fair, choral music was Michael Haydn’s forte. But his relatively few orchestral works are more than historical curiosities. One of his string quartets, for example, was misattributed to Franz Joseph. And for years, Michael Haydn’s Symphony No. 25 was credited to Mozart. The Capella Savria present four of Michael Haydn’s concertos. These include his two flute concertos and two of three violin concertos. Haydn composed the works in Salzburg, where he was a friend of the Mozarts. The concertos bear some similarities to Leopold Mozart’s style. The melodic phrases are balanced and clearly defined. The solo parts require a high degree of skill to play. But they’re not especially flashy. The elegance of expression tempers the technical challenges.

The backbones of the present recording are Schubert’s two late violin-piano compositions: the Rondo in B minor and the Fantasia in C major, both commissioned by virtuoso Czech violinist Josef Slavík. Particularly interesting is the fact, that the violin-piano paraphrase of the song "Sei mir gegrüsst" is performed twice: once as a variation section of the Fantasia, once in H. Sitt's arrangement. Violinist Júlia Pusker is an established young musician who made it into the final of the prestigious Queen Elisabeth Competition in 2019. Her partner here is Zoltán Fejérvári, Junior Prima Prize-winning pianist, winner of the 2017 Montreal International Piano Competition.

Based on the number and the quality of his works, Georg Philipp Telemann (1681–1767) can by all means regarded as one of the greatest Baroque composers. His œuvre comprising a large number of concertos for two, three or even four solo instruments, a fact that also show his determined efforts to please a broad range of music-savvy audiences. Capella Savaria, Hungary’s oldest period instrument ensemble, presents six of these on this album. Founded in 1981, in Szombathely, Capella Savaria has earned its fame as the first period-instrument chamber orchestra of Hungary. Its innovative efforts created quite a sensation at the time in musical circles. The ensemble’s objectives were, from the onset, to play Baroque and Classical music in an authentic way by relying on genuine documents of the period. The founding artistic director was Pál Németh, followed by Zsolt Kalló who has been directing the ensemble since 1999. The members of the ensemble play authentic 18th-century instruments, or their copies.

The third part of our series features the serenades of four Romantic composers. Every bar of Victor Herbert’s Serenade presents Herbert as a composer who is intimately familiar with the world of the musical stage. Elgar and Fuchs’s Serenades are youthful compositions: the former holds its place in the repertoire for the ensemble to this day, while Fuchs’s Serenade has the technical perfection typical of the composer. This recording closes with what is perhaps the most popular melody from Schubert’s last song cycle, Schwanengesang.Anima Musicae Chamber Orchestra was founded by Laszlo Horvath in 2010 with the students of the Liszt Ferenc Academy. Despite its short career the chamber orchestra accomplished a large number of concerts with growing success. From the very beginning, the orchestra has not only been inspired, but also mentored by János Rolla, the artistic director of the world renowned Liszt Ferenc Chamber Orchestra.

This CD contains a fine performance of the Michael Haydn's Requiem, but if you are interested in hearing the much discussed striking influence of this Requiem on Mozart's, this is not most persuasive performance. For Rilling gives a rather musically suave reading, emphasizing a certain comforting quality to the music, and though you can still make the comparison, there is a better take on that angle. The old Hinreiner recording which was on a Koch/Schwann lp (I don't think it ever made it to CD) is actually much better for suggesting the almost spooky and dusky similarity between the two works. Still, this one is very heartfelt and enjoyable. But the much more spectacular event on this CD is the St. Francis Mass of Michael Haydn.

This is not the first time that these four artists have played together in concert, but this fact does not diminish in the least, indeed, it only serves to further enhance the attractiveness of the event. Anyone who has already heard flautist Noémi Győri playing with her string colleagues Katalin Kokas, Dóra Kokas and Péter Bársony knows full well that they are in for a chamber music experience unlike any other. Just like their Marble Hall concert last January, here too the bulk of the programme comprises works by Haydn and Mozart.
