There are few conductors of choral music who achieved higher levels of recognition or acclaim than Sir David Willcocks. For over 30 years, as conductor of the Bach Choir and director of the Royal College of Music, he achieved a standard of performing and teaching second to none in the musical world. Willcocks was a chorister at Westminster Abbey from ages ten through 14, and later studied at Clifton College before becoming an organ scholar at King's College, Cambridge in 1939. His studies were interrupted by the outbreak of World War II, during which he served in the British Infantry, winning the Military Cross in 1944.

This compendium of British Piano Sonatas has been dictated by quality and variety. There are obvious omissions, largely of composers who wrote fine music for the piano, but maybe not in the form or structure suggested by the loaded word ‘sonata’. All the works presented here show their composers’ thinking over a bigger scale than their smaller pieces might allow, so that the listener is able to indulge in the creator’s sound world and control of musical form over longer periods. Here are a dozen such works each totally representative of their composers. We can delight in the stylistic and sonic contrasts as well as revelling in their varieties of keyboard writing. oday, Glazunov (1865–1936) is often dismissed as a conservative who offered little beyond a timid orthodoxy. True, his style remained largely unaltered as Russia turbulently evolved from feudal monarchy to Communist state, yet it is easy: to underestimate the sheer style and character of, for example, the lush melody at the heart of the Second Etude, Op. 31 or the central whirlwind that erupts fat the centre of the B flat minor Sonata's Scherzo.

From the winding orientalism of Khachaturian’s G minor Trio of 1932 to the jaunty Caribbean dance that rounds off Roger Henry’s recent Trio No. 2, a highly engaging and colourful journey through the clarinet trio repertoire.

American pianist, Richard Masters, explores the piano works of Percy Grainger and his circle - while a student at the Hoch Conservatory, Frankfurt, Grainger studied piano with James Kwast and composition with Ivan Knorr. Knorr provided a key connection to four other composition students who would eventually be known as the Frankfurt Group. The group was comprised of five English-speaking expatriates: Grainger, Norman O’Neill (1875-1934), Cyril Scott (1879-1970), Henry Balfour Gardiner (1877-1950), and Roger Quilter (1877-1953). They wished to break out in new directions, to free English music from the yoke of Germanic oppression, blazing new trails that did not rely on the work of the much-despised Beethoven or other similar Teutons for guidance. The result was music that embraced irregular rhythms, exotic harmonies, expanding the vocabulary of the piano and utilizing it as a technicolour, evocative, and sometimes percussive instrument.
